At Mather Pa May 22 a miner, Frank Krubik, was rescued after more than 60 hours entombed in the blast shattered Mather mine as 82 dead and 130 still missing were reported. Rescuers pressed on despite fires and gas aiming to save others.
The Business Men's Association invites Winchester and Frederick County residents to an open mass meeting at the George Washington Hotel tonight at 8 o'clock. Merchants and Civic League members are urged to attend, with James True of Washington as the speaker. Louis I. Baker will introduce him.
William S. Hiett a well known fruit grower on North Frederick grade sent three city fire companies the personal checks for 100 each to be divided among Friendship Sarah Zane and Charley Rousshis for their services in saving his residence. A letter of appreciation accompanied the gift praising the department.
Plans for forming the Winchester Aviation Club into a permanent organization will be shaped at Friday evening’s stockholders meeting at the George Washington Hotel. A permanent slate of officers will be elected and a charter applied for. The Virginia corporation will have 5000 to 10000 dollars in capital stock. Subscriptions may be sent to Ralph R. Rosenberger for immediate consideration.
The Winchester and Clarke County Garden Club members travel to The Plains Fauquier county for the regional Garden Club of Virginia show held May 31. It runs 3 30 to 9 pm at the parish hall with prizes cups for peonies and ribbons, exhibits received May 30. Admission 25 cents adults 10 cents children.

The case hinges on her age, with her parents asserting she is about 15. Jurisdiction was settled as a city case.
The Virginia Classis of the Reformed Church in the United States will meet in Centenary Church Winchester during May 1929. Delegates from Lovettsville approved the move, with Rev. Dr. S I Flickinger extending the invitation. Centenary Church is one of the county’s oldest and most historic.

The Scofield dam near Salt Lake City withstood pressure from about 60,000 acre feet of water. About 200 extra volunteers joined 300 workers to reinforce a dike and limit seepage, though engineers warned leaks were not fully stopped.
Four people died and up to 50 were injured as wind hail and lightning lashed central Texas. A 14 year old boy and his mother were struck by a 70 mile wind and large hail while working in a field near Laredo. Two cowboys perished when wind wrecked their house south of Laredo and Harry Hitz of Cameron was killed by lightning. A tornado near Ferris in Ellis county damaged several homes.
Washington May 22 The death of Naval Lieutenant William Harold Reggingdon of Coronado California was reported by the Navy department as the first Langley aircraft fatality since 1922. He drowned when his plane struck a preceding aircraft during takeoff aboard the Langley. Reggingdon was Naval Academy class of 1922.
The New York stock market fell broadly as selling followed credit restriction measures. Industrials and specialties dropped 5 to nearly 20 points while senior rails and dividend payers slid 1 to 4 points amid heavy liquidation. Call money unchanged at 6 percent. Total volume about 3 million shares.
A northbound mail plane crashed near Sandston Richmond killing pilot KF J Morrissery 35 of Aurora IL on route from Byrd airport to Washington and Philadelphia. Fog caused loss of landings and the wreck sent mail to Washington by train.
The will of Mrs. M. G. S. Anderson was probated in the Corporation Court yesterday. She names her son Walter P. Anderson as executor.
