On Koje Island Korea a Chinese prisoner was killed by an Allied guard during a search after a work detail. The incident marks the third POW violence in four days at the camp.
Hugh B. Emmons of Route 50 east operated Winchester Building Supply Company was acquitted of breaking and entering a beer warehouse and stealing seven bottles. The trial featured FBI fingerprint testimony and character witnesses, with evidence showing he was at his office during the incident. The break-in targeted Preston I. Moffett, Perry Engineering, and Winchester facilities in the same building.
Gen Mat Ridgway told senators that Communist prisoners in U N POW camps produced a reign of terror against fellow inmates. He cited bodies found and Red flags inside camps and noted limited ability to control rioting elements amid Korea truce talks.
New York reports the Dun & Bradstreet wholesale food index climbed to 6.48 from 6.38 marking the sharpest weekly gain since December 1950. The rise follows after wartime scare buying and covers 31 staple foods with higher prices for flour wheat corn barley hams belts lard cheese sugar and cotton seed oil. Rye oats and butter fell.
Korean Communist negotiators protested Allied handling of Red riots at an Allied POW hospital in Pusan. Gen Nam demanded an accounting of a hospital incident in which one prisoner died and 85 were injured. The UN Command said more than half of 169,000 Red prisoners refuse repatriation.
In Paris Premier Antoine Pinay awarded Gen Dwight D Eisenhower France's Medaille Militaire in a farewell ceremony beneath Napoleon's tomb. The Court of Honor at Les Invalides hosted the event, noting Churchill was the last foreigner to receive the honor in 1946.

In Winchester a mass meeting at the courthouse elected six delegates and six alternates to the state and district conventions all uninstructed with a preference for Eisenhower. H. B. McCormac Jr was chosen city chairman and Ralph Hardy secretary as the party plans a future executive committee.
Washington sources report three large unions representing engineers firemen and conductors weighing the White House peace plan after an extra clarification meeting with National Mediation Board chairman Leverett Edwards. Top policy groups vote later today on the proposed contract as carriers accepted the plan earlier.
Bellingham Washington reports four bodies recovered from the 35 foot sloop Prelude after it vanished Sunday evening. The victims include Ellen Fordyce and her son Kenneth 12 Ed E Jukes and Donald Card. Search continues for Paul Fordyce owner of the yacht and two others still missing.
Nelson County delegate Rob ert Whitehead labeled Senator Byrd a fraidy cat and said Byrd avoided a debate with Francis Pickens Miller by citing busy official duties in Washington. Whitehead claimed Miller has called Byrd's bluff and challenged Byrd’s followers over the renomination stakes. Byrd cited duties in Washington for declining the July 15 primary debate.
The Tax Court postponed a hearing on government claims totaling over two and a half million dollars in back taxes penalties and interest from William G. Lias of Wheeling West Virginia. The hearing had been set for tomorrow and is now rescheduled for June 9.
Senator Robert A. Taft lost the Georgetown precinct where he lives but carried ten other precincts to secure Washington's six Republican National Convention votes.
The race for presidential delegates heats up as Taft and Eisenhower factions clash over foreign aid spending. In Montana Taft won seven of eight delegates while Eisenhower backers blocked instructing the delegation. Contests extend to Maryland Washington Connecticut Minnesota and Texas as the campaign for the 1948 nominating convention intensifies.
Robinson Virginia and Winchester cold storage plants show dwindling apple stocks and faster turnover. Robinson cleared for 30 days versus last year, Virginia holds 15 574 bushels mostly sold with 20 days to move, Winchester 11 190 bushels mostly sold, down from 51 408 last year. Prices and grade are better than a year ago.

Actor John Garfield 39 died of a heart ailment in the Gramercy Park apartment of actress Iris Whitney. Medical examiner says death from cardiac condition, no foul play suspected. Garfield rose to fame in Golden Boy and appeared in Broadway and Hollywood productions.
In West Point remarks Pace warns that the current partial mobilization may last indefinitely and a peacetime army like the 1930s will not return. He predicts the force could be three to four times prewar size within a generation as Truman urged vigilance against future aggression.

The Senate confirmed James P. McGranery 52 to 18 to succeed J. Howard McGrath as attorney general. McGranery, 56, a former House member and longtime judge in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, pledged to prosecute corruption and dismiss any dishonest Justice Department staff. Pennsylvania's Duff and Martin were among the approving Republicans.
Norfolk police investigate a second county murder in eight months where the victim Lucullus Gregory 39 Owl's Creek was killed by a .22 calibre shot to the head and later his head and body were found separately in the Oceana area. authorities say no link to the prior October double murder is established.
Wilmington harbor vessel Old Tug No. 10, famed for hauling large ships, sank after being used to tow a floating barge for a style show. The deck carried models in swimwear and lingerie which overwhelmed the aging tug, capsizing it upon returning to the dock.
