Israel prepares for action against massing Syrian and Egyptian forces amid calls for war by Syria s defense minister. Egypt patrols its border as a 3400 man U N peacekeeping force withdraws at Egypt s request. U Thant urges calm while CC tensions rise across the region.

Washington AP reports that a three week Senate delay on a resolution to censure Senator Thomas J. Dodd is expected to heighten pressure to clear him of misconduct charges.
Two American doctors from Kentucky and California landed near Paris at Corneille Airport about 8:45 a.m. local time, completing a roughly 20 hour solo trip from New York in a single engine plane aiming to replicate Lindbergh’s 1927 Paris flight. The men, Dr. Francis Sommer and Dr. John Rieger, diverted to Corneille due to Bourget’s air show traffic.
U S officials estimate Israel could face about 260 000 Egyptians and 115 000 Syrians if war breaks out. Israel's 300 000 troops, 800 tanks, and 350 aircraft would collide with Egypt’s 310 000 and Syria’s forces, while U A R and Syrian air power total about 700. Experts say the U A R led by Nasser would be far stronger than 1956 levels, with Egypt backing Syria and Iraq unlikely to join. Jordan stays on the sidelines.
Washington reports say the Johnson administration defended a South Vietnam DMZ ground push as defensive and not an invasion. Critics warn it escalates the war and risks a wider conflict with China and possibly World War III.
SAIGON AP Chief of State Nguyen Van Thieu will run against Premier Nguyen Cao Ky in the September elections. The move risks dividing the South Vietnamese military as Communist pressure mounts. The Military Leadership Council backed Ky, while Thieu’s spokesman said Thieu would run without splitting the armed forces. Ky had said he might withdraw if Thieu entered the race and the junta had not backed any candidate.
Civil Defense units in Winchester and surrounding areas were alerted as a severe thunderstorm watch covered Rockingham Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Hail was reported in Wardensville West Virginia and Gore area with .46 inch precipitation at the Winchester Fruit Research Lab. Officials kept units on standby from 1 to 7 p.m. with alerts issued to Mayor Battaile and Civil Defense headquarters beneath Handley School.
U S planes clashed with MIGs over North Vietnam for a second day with pilots claiming five downed and one probable kill. In the demilitarized zone near the Ben Hai line and Quang Tri City, Marine and South Vietnamese units pressed a multi battalion push as Communist forces, supported by tanks, attacked. Naval gunfire and allied air strikes targeted the attackers while Da Nang and Thailand based units engaged in air battles.
