Dies in Clarke County head on crash near Berryville
Elwood Ellitte Jenkins 20 of Berryville Rt. 1 died when his car collided head on with a second vehicle on Rt. 7 about 0.9 mile east of Berryville. Four people were involved, including James William Martz 79 and Margaret Martz 65 from Bluemont. Police reported Jenkins suffered a broken neck and died at Winchester Memorial Hospital. The other injured were Martz with chest injuries and a cut, Margaret Martz with facial and bodily contusions, and Margaret Strong 57 with a dislocated shoulder. Trooper L P Coverstone said the Jenkins car was westbound and the third car struck a bank after veering to avoid the crash. Damages estimated at 1550 dollars. Jenkins born March 31 1945 in Winchester. Survived by mother Loretta Lee Ingle and half brother Oscar A. (Continued on Page 2).

The State Highway Commission awarded Echols Brothers Inc. a 737121 dollar contract to build 1.69 miles of four lane highway on Rt. 522 north of Winchester. The project extends from 5.64 miles north of Winchester to near Gainesboro with work already under way on the initial 5.6 miles. The awards totaled 18753478 dollars for interstate 64 construction including 31 million for 2.75 miles of roadway and five bridges west of Richmond and 54 million for a major interchange at Norfolk. Additional contracts include Stafford County to Henry County and Washington County reconstructions with various paving and surfacing work.

A Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 720B crashed during its Karachi to London inaugural flight near Cairo Airport killing 120 of 126 aboard and injuring six.
