Senator Tillman of South Carolina, chairing the naval committee, opposes the rivers and harbors bill and calls for spending on battleships. He pledges up to 300 million dollars for the navy, denounces the measure as a steal, and criticizes Congress for localism and poor military preparedness.

General Funston said he would hasten the rearrangement of American troops on the border in anticipation of new attacks by Mexican bandits. He was disappointed to learn the Sixth Cavalry return at Columbus had been made public. He had intended to announce the movement only after troops reached the Big Bend area.
Mr. cote Maucher, a native of Germany long settled in this country, died at 8 o'clock this morning at the Frederick county parish farm where he had lived for some time. He leaves a widow and four children in the county. Funeral services are set for Sunday afternoon at the county farm with interment in the farm graveyard. Miss Nell OConnell leaves for Baltimore to enter Maryland University Hospital as a pupil nurse.
William M. McAllister of Warm Springs Virginia, a former private and later sergeant in Carpenter's Battery, recalls the Winchester battles from 1861 to 1864. He encloses a $15 check toward a Confederate monument for Frederick County, praising local heroes and the county cemetery.
The casket with Dr. Edmond P. D. Wotring of Morgantown West Virginia arrived in the city and was reinterred in the family lot at Mount Hebron Cemetery after being buried sixteen years. No services were held at the grave. He was a son of the late Captain J. M. Wotring of the Confederate army, born and raised in Hayfield, and died of typhoid fever in Morgantown in 1900 at age 27.
Announcement reports the sale of Dr. Walter Cox’s residential property on West Piccadilly Street to Garland M. Hansbrough of Hansbrough and Carter. Hansbrough will take possession September 1, the two story brick house formerly part of the Episcopal Female Institute now occupied by Mr and Mrs Melvin Green.

British airmen pursued the raiders across the North Sea while no infantry actions were reported on the Verdun front. A British destroyer was struck by a seaplane bomb in the Planders engagement.
