President Truman urged Congress to enact a federal health disability insurance plan for workers unable to work due to illness or injury. He argued sickness is the missing element in social security and pressed for broader public health efforts and research funding.
Dr John Adams has joined Dr Ellsworth Johnson in the radiology practice at Winchester Memorial Hospital. A Davidson College B S, Jefferson Medical College graduate, his radiology training was at Pennsylvania and Virginia. He is American Board certified and has practiced in Johnson City and Terre Haute. The Adams family now resides at 2 West Germania Street, city.
Lahore India May 19 police and troops patrolled streets after week end clashes between Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh mobs. The city remained under a 24 hour curfew amid widespread unrest with casualties reported in hospital counts and deaths days into the commotion.
A weather note records a high of 89 and a low of 6 for the day. It also notes a year ago high of 80 and low of 52.
London reports Britain plans to transfer defense of the Mediterranean and Suez Canal to the United States within two to three years, while withdrawing empire bases to East Africa. Chicago police report a dinner party at a west side apartment ended in three men shot and killed. Albert Fineberg 38 and Benjamin Eisenstein 39 were killed, while George Stanislawski 32 an ex convict and one robber also died. Lionel Takiff 38 was injured. another guest is reported in good condition.
Gasoline fed flames rose four thousand feet as the tanker Pan-Massachusetts a tug and a dock suffered major damage in Texas City. Forty seven seamen were injured and two tug crewmen burned critically while escaping the blaze. The Pan American Refinery dock end and local waterfront facilities were damaged.
A Navy plane crashed on a Burlington Iowa school playground yesterday. The pilot and two schoolboys were killed, six other youths injured, as wreckage showered a four block area. The incident occurred on May 18 with rescue teams responding swiftly. Authorities investigated the cause of the crash and secured the scene for examination.
Secretary of the Treasury Snyder told the House Ways and Means Committee that a period of tax reduction is approaching but offered no specific cuts or timing. He cited the need to consider reductions later and reviewed twenty levies under study without recommendations while the 4 billion tax cut bill awaits Senate action.
In Greenville South Carolina Circuit Judge J Robert Martin Jr directed acquittals for three of 31 defendants accused of lynching a Black man. The Supreme Court ruled three Texas journalists were improperly convicted of contempt for publishing an eviction case story and an editorial. Grandview Missouri reports the ailing 94 year old Mrs Martha Truman feeling better while President Truman remains beside her. Brig. Gen Wallace H Graham confirms no material change in her condition and says she is tired but cheerful and not leaving bed today.

Aberdeen Angus Hereford and Shorthorn consignors from multiple towns compete with Bangs certificates and judging by Dr. E A Liveay. Auctioneer Col H Earl Wright leads the sale with about 75 dollars in cash prizes for FFA and 4‑H participants.
Maurice Franklin Wisecarver Sr., 55, longtime Berryville clothing shop owner and Gent's Shop proprietor, died at Memorial Hospital after illness since February. He was a WWI veteran, a deacon at Berryville Presbyterian Church, and active in American Legion Lloyd Williams Post 41, Clarke County Lions Club, and Knights of Pythias. Survived by wife Camille, three children, six brothers, one sister, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. from his Berryville West Main residence. interment in Green Hill Cemetery.

George Richard Ridgewell of Portland Maine and William Hall of St Louis were arraigned in Frederick circuit court on December murder charges in the strangulation death of Frederick Currie the Michigan seaman. Ridgewell pleaded innocent earlier and both suspects waived a jury trial as a second venire was summoned for Hall’s trial.
