Navy chief hints at mother ship dirigible for bombers
Rear Admiral A B Cook told a Senate subcommittee of a great possibility for a large dirigible to serve as a mother ship carrying nine bombers and 12 to 15 attack planes. He said releasing planes at 8000 to 10000 feet could save climb time. The Navy wants no immediate rigid airship construction. Roosevelt ordered halting plans and rejected a larger ship as unsafe. The Senate cut a 500000 dirgible grant from the naval appropriation while approving 600000 for nitric acid production at Indian Head to reduce reliance on Chinese imports.
