Abingdon Lawyer Nominated for Federal Judgeship
James P. Jones of Abingdon is nominated for a Western District seat as part of two new Virginia positions. President Carter announced the nomination amid Byrd’s list of 10 white male candidates, with Richard L. Williams of Richmond named for the Eastern District. The two must pass the Senate committee and full Senate. Byrd indicated he would back Jones and Williams, while the remaining two seats could see a nonlist candidate, potentially a woman or Black nominee. Jones, 38, says he is honored and not personally affected by the controversy.
