U S air cavalry reinforced to 350 or more North Vietnamese regulars in the central highlands as helicopters airlifted three cavalry battalions to a battle 15 miles west of An Khe. The enemy was said to be retreating at nightfall after a daylong fight with American forces.
Washington sources report the Johnson administration backing a strong Vietnamese military role in any future Saigon government while not endorsing Premier Nguyen Cao Ky. The move follows Ky's Buddhist crisis and includes Rusk and Fulbright signaling hearings on Viet Nam. Lodge departs for Saigon after Seoul talks as Seoul weighs sending 20,000 more troops.

The New York Times cites Bucharest saying Russia should not keep command in Warsaw Pact forces and that costs for stationing Soviet troops should end.
Dallas County Democratic Executive Committee was summoned to federal court to justify removing 1,400 votes from Wilson Baker in the Selma sheriff race. The Voting Rights Act case seeks to award Baker the nomination over Sheriff James G. Clark amid a runoff dispute. An earlier return fire occurred as a gunman fired into Baker’s former home. a $200 reward was set.
A. C. Slonaker & Sons says they will remain closed on Saturday mornings until further notice, informing customers of the adjusted hours.
France announced it will conduct atomic tests at Mururoa in the Pacific, about 45 days from notice. The tests aim to develop a trigger for a hydrogen bomb, planned for 1967 or early 1968, after leaving Sahara grounds by mid 1967 under an Algeria pact. France did not sign the Moscow atmospheric test ban treaty.
A. Winchester man William A. Cooper twenty seven from 10 Springcrest Ave was moved to University Hospital Charlottesville with a poor semi conscious condition after head injuries from a crash that killed Wade H. Guard Jr. of 224 Opequon Ave. The light plane struck high tension wires and plunged north of Izaak Walton Park lake east of Winchester.
Archie Lee Miracle, 22, pleaded guilty to armed robbery and attempted murder of a sailor last Aug. 5. He was sentenced to two concurrent 20 year terms by Judge Elliott Marshall in Frederick County Circuit Court. The court also ordered him to pay prosecution costs.
Six automobiles were sold at a public auction Friday evening in the Winchester Frederick County jail yard. Vehicles brought from $10 to over $100. Three were confiscated from drivers with revoked licenses. the remainder were sold to satisfy judgments. Proceeds go to the State Literary Fund. Auctioneer Charles R. Duvall conducted sale.
The Air Force says budget cuts will curb emergency responses outside Viet Nam and reduce airborne alert for B52s. The Army warns insufficient funds may hamper remaining operations this fiscal year. Maj. Gen. Crow and Maj. Gen. Taylor testified the proposed 1967 budget limits, with the Air Force originally seeking 5.44 billion and the Defense Department trimming 566 million before restoring 67.4 million.
