Test flight shows a spacecraft maneuver with a test crew aboard as engineers monitor performance. Officials report smooth operations and a successful ascent despite minor adjustments during the trial.
At Roosevelt Field and Mineola the Fokker America piloted by Byrd with Acosta Neville and Balchen carried 11 350 pounds of water and sand in a short lift test deemed most successful. Future tests with 13 400 and 14 500 pounds are planned as Byrd aims for an Atlantic crossing with a heavy load.
National Cemetery prepares for Memorial Day with flag placement on over 5000 Federal graves on May 28. Samuel Hershman and assistants trim lawns and organize flowers for May 30 ceremony at 2:30 PM, with alternative City Hall location if rain. Visitors asked to sign register. flowers welcome. The Rev Dr Murray D Mitchell of Braddock Street Methodist Episcopal Church South is confined to bed with influenza. He was improved somewhat today and may be able to be out in about a week.
James Albert Brown 70s resident of Winchester died at his residence 540 North Braddock Street from paralysis after a paralytic stroke. A transfer operator and later Shenandoah Valley Apple Cider and Vinegar Company worker, he leaves a wife three sons Lee Ralph Frank and two daughters Alice Patrick and James Streit and 11 grandchildren. Funeral at United Brethren Church with Rev George W Stover officiating and Shawnee Tribe Red Men in charge. pallbearers listed. burial Mount Hebron Cemetery.

In the Corporation Court Judge Williams construed the will of Thomas Pugh who died in this city. The court held the $500 trust fund must go to Capon Valley Bank but its charter prevents trust business so funds go to Commercial and Savings Bank of Winchester to invest for graveyard maintenance at Home Place Highview and Bethel Church. Residuary estate to be divided equally among Ira Pugh Joseph W. Pugh Homer W. Pugh F M Selden Bessie Arnold and Andrew Anderson. Specific legacies of $500 to Jesse Pugh and $5 to Ida Blakly payable after admin costs and debts. Ward Orndorff note to be delivered to him.
A large cereal company presents free motion pictures at 8 o clock tonight at the American Legion building. J J Sullivan local representative says three new poultry films will be shown plus two reels on Guernsey and Holstein dairy cattle. The event includes discussions on poultry raising and milk value with notable breed features and judging demonstrations. Governor Byrd and Mrs Byrd host tea for British guests at the Governor's Mansion this afternoon.
Dr. Walter D. Myers attends the annual West Virginia State Dental Association convention this week in Martinsburg. The issue notes an advertisement for Moling and Seal Washable Silk on page 7.
Apples For Health Inc will launch a four year national advertising drive to fund a 4 million dollar campaign for U S apple growers. Headquarters are set in Indianapolis with plans to start by July 1 and raise the full sum within 60 days.
After a week of search the fate of Captains Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli remains unclear as Newfoundland and North Sea reports fail to confirm the White Bird or any wreck. The International League of Aviators plans a memorial at Etretat while a rum run narrative in Lynn Mass reports a large plane seen off Cape Sable.
Charles Steel of Pennsylvania was fined $17 including costs in police court for violating traffic laws by failing to yield the right of way. His car collided with an automobile driven by Ernest Strosnider at Loudoun and Piccadilly Streets, damaging the other vehicle.

Mr. Gorby just returned from a Pacific Northwest trip addressing apple growers and business leaders in Seattle Portland Wenatchee Yakima Spokane Hood River Boise Grand Junction. The annual Diocese of Virginia council meets in Christ Episcopal Church Winchester starting 8 p m with delegates from northern Virginia. Bishop William Cabell Brown presides and questions on parish apportionments dominate discussions as clergy and laity attend through Thursday with services, holy communion and a concert on the program.
The fourteenth annual convention of the Sunday schools of Stonewall district will be held in the Methodist Episcopal Church South at Bruce town on Wednesday May 25 from 10 a m to 4 p m with lunch. The program lists devotional services, addresses by Rev J D Russell Rev Edward Miller Rev Kesecker and I N Good among others plus readings, recitations, music, a pantomime and an offering for Sunday school work.
The Winchester tuberculosis clinic, serving the city and vicinity, will occur Friday May 20 at the District Nurse Association offices in the Chamber of Commerce building from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dr. E C Harper of the State Board of Health will lead the event with association nurses and local doctors assisting. The service is free to anyone with symptoms or concern about tuberculosis and includes a complimentary chest examination.
The remains of Margaret Ritter who died in Washington D C are due this evening by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and will lie in state at the home of Mr Harvey Carper on East Germain Street. The funeral will be held tomorrow Wednesday at 3 o clock with burial in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
The Federal Trade Commission will hold an informal public hearing in Richmond on May 25 to review gasoline selling methods in Virginia Tidewater. No formal charges. the meeting seeks information as tank wagon prices, free pump installations, and rebates figure in the inquiry amid a Norfolk price cut and industry denials.
D. B. Conrad paid a $25 fine in police court for reckless operation of a car that damaged a fire hydrant on Amherst Street Sunday morning. The court revoked his license for one year and he must compensate the city of Winchester for hydrant damages and the Kern estate for fence damages in front of the Kern residence.
The will dated January 1, 1916, left the estate equally to four children. Dr A D Henkel was named executor but declined. Frank O Quantz, a son, was appointed and administered the estate.
