Senate doves praise the plan but urge deeper actions to curb U.S. activity in Vietnam. Support from Republicans emphasizes potential for negotiation, with figures like Dirksen and Goldwater urging patience and confidence in Nixon’s approach.
The U S Command reported 48 American aircraft lost in Vietnam over the past week, raising total losses to 5 346 since the war began. Of the week’s losses 22 helicopters were shot down and 18 lost to other causes. one American was killed and four wounded. The figure reflects continuing heavy air operations and intensified rocket and mortar attacks by the enemy.
A memorial service is set for Friday May 30 at 1 30 p m at the flag pole memorial in Shenandoah Memorial Park. Rev Edward M Garrett Jr of Wesley Methodist Church will speak. The color guard and firing squad of Post 2123 Veterans of Foreign Wars will participate. A flag will line the park entrance roads.
A warm weekend is expected with highs around 80 to 85 degrees and no rain until early next week. Yesterday reached 72, today noon near 73, and meteorologists forecast above normal temperatures for the next five days.
The statue of Charles Broadway Rouss, placed in Rouss City Hall in 1900, has been moved aside as remodeling progresses to create more office space. An alcove is being built around it with funds from Mr. Reuss. Final remodeling costs are not yet set. work began Monday.

Cerna practices in the lunar module simulator while Saturn 5 rockets prepare at 12 49 p m EDT. Officials expect hundreds of thousands to watch, with churches adjusting services to view the liftoff.

Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge formally presented President Nixon's eight point plan in Paris. North Vietnam and the Viet Cong denounced but did not reject it outright as the 17th full session ended. Thuy accused US plans of neocolonial aims while demanding full troop withdrawals.
Richmond AP reports high pressure over southern New England brings mostly fair skies to Virginia with stable conditions and light winds across the state. No significant precipitation expected as solar conditions persist.
