President Johnson accuses the Soviet Premier of using the U2 incident to derail talks at the summit. House Speaker Rayburn says agreement seems unlikely and warns the conference may be a failure. Johnson calls Khrushchev’s approach a ploy to turn negotiations into propaganda.
Miss Aimee Alexander Gibson selected winner of the Evening Star Leadership Award from Winchester seniors. She receives $350 toward college, among $1,050 total awards across Clarke and Frederick County systems instituted in 1954 by Harry F. Byrd Jr. The Handley student is active in school clubs, travels widely, and plans to attend college with aid from the prize.
Apple Blossom events feature high school students from Handley performing The Lifeline on Channel 3 at 6 PM. Cast includes May Evans Mary Jane Aikens Billy Webber and seniors Marguerite Kellas Valerie Bolton with sponsor Joyce Searle. Parade director Chrisman welcomes the Grand Feature parade and SOS requests copies for out of town workers.
Purcellville resident William Harvey Nicholas died of a heart attack after his 1953 Buick crossed Rt 340 near Berryville and struck a westbound 1959 De Soto driven by Harry Kenneth Moten. Sister Mary Elizabeth Nichols helped steer before the car veered off the road. Willingham, injured in a second crash on Rt 340, was hospitalized.
East Germany reports a Sunday night express and local train collision in Leipzig. The East German news agency ADN cites 59 dead and 100 injured.
Howard Criswell admitted to nine shootings and was jailed without bond on nine counts of assault with intent to murder. A mental examination was ordered after he said the urge to kill drove his actions while authorities quoted him describing a sense of relief after each hit.
The Soviet Union filed a formal protest after an unidentified plane crossed into East German airspace near Boizenburg. An Allied spokesman called it a small French sport plane en route from Strasbourg to Malmo, straying 56 miles into East German territory at 5500 feet.

TWUA froze Local 371 assets and named an administrator while hearings proceed over an $8,000 bond purchase for the John S. Mosby Academy. Local leadership plans to challenge the move and take the dispute to the TWUA national convention in Chicago.
The Paris summit ends its first session with the United States and the Soviet Union blaming each other for sabotaging the meeting aimed at easing world tensions. Khrushchev demands a six month delay and cancels Eisenhower’s visit while Eisenhower pledges no more U2 flights over the Soviet Union.
President Mo declared that Soviet aircraft have been flying over Pakistan for some time Ayub Khan said this while returning from the British Commonwealth prime ministers conference and was questioned by reporters about Moscow.
Eleven buildings and 10 acres of Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music land will be auctioned tomorrow as the school prepares to move. The Evangelical United Brethren president Racey said the buildings encompass much floor space and the sale aims to settle the institution’s move.
