New Dealers Pleased By Holt Defeat In West Virginia
Senator Holt of West Virginia, a longtime Democratic critic of President Roosevelt, was defeated in the state Democratic renomination. Holt had opposed the 1937 court reorganization bill and the cash and carry neutrality plan and had talked of an anti third term resolution. He finished third in the West Virginia Democratic nominating race for judge Harley M. Beckley and faced state Senator Thomas B. Sweeney of King in the general contest. The defeat marks Holt as the second senator this spring to lose renomination, following a Nebraska counterpart who opposed administration policy. Other retiring Democratic and Republican figures were named for seats and races.
