The Agriculture Department announced a plan to curb domestic wheat use through mid 1947 to keep 250 million bushels for famine areas. It preserves milling limits and beer whiskey bans, raises distribution cap to 85 percent from 75, and requires 25 percent of purchases by commercial buyers for export.
Ray Longerbeam of Clarke County was found guilty by Clarke Circuit Court Judge Burr P. Harrison of larceny of an automobile belonging to Louis Allen. He received a sentence of 1 year and 1 day in the State penitentiary with 54 days credit and was ordered remanded to jail. Three others, Leonard Renzie Benjamin Franklin Ford alias Bill Ford and William Henry Jackson, face indictments for larceny of hogs from a Clarke County outbuilding valued at $15 each. they are to be arraigned May 17 before Judge Harrison.

Judge Burr P. Harrison calls the Frederick county grand jury to meet next Monday morning for the May term. The only case to date is Earl B. Dill of near Whitacre charged with shooting Edward Roe. Jury members summoned include A. D. Cather E. W. Shenk B. H. Potts J. O. Chamberlain Hughee E. Dean Adams and P. C. Petrie.

Senate leaders agreed to accept House prohibitions on drafting fathers and 18 and 19 year olds to extend the draft to July 1. Winchester issued 49 times more building permits in January to April 1946 than 1945, totaling 392 350 dollars with April the peak at 22600 and March at 98950. Nearly 80 percent funded home construction including 59 single family dwellings and 4 multi family units. Non residential permits reached 85250 with 10 buildings and 31400 for commercial garages with living space.
President Truman convened a White House conference with the Big Five railroad brotherhoods and operators to avert a strike by 250 000 engineers and trainmen. He planned talks at 3 45 p m EST with brotherhood leaders and, later, with the Association of American Railroads. He warned he might seize the railroads to keep the system running if needed.
Dr Jose Giral premier of the Spanish Republican government in exile presented a 350 page indictment to the United Nations charging that Franco Spain threatened world peace. The document was expected to go to the U N security council sub committee investigating Franco Spain. No official details were released.
President Truman has ordered War and Navy secretaries to agree on unifying the armed forces by May 31. A White House briefing said progress was made in a 30 minute meeting with top military and naval officials. Navy and War leaders agreed to list points of agreement and disagreement and meet frequently. The Armistice proposal for merger shifts to Capitol Hill with debate over Navy department status and Marine Corps leadership in amphibious operations.
In Portland Oregon on May 14 1947 Siamese twin girls Susan and Carol born to Mr and Mrs Edward Horse Deep River Washington died in a local hospital. One twin died at 635 am PST and the other 25 minutes later. The 26 year old mother faced tragedy with mixed sorrow and relief as the infants weakened after a brief period of strength.

In Abingdon Virginia on May 1 Elle Talbert Clark 42 widow and golf star mother was found guilty of second degree murder in the shooting death of Newton, a Damascus high school football coach, at the Clark home in 1945. The verdict came after a trial by an 11 farmer and one merchant jury ending at 10 16 p.m. The defense requested a new trial and will apply before May 25 while court reconvenes May 27.
