Leonard H. Thorpe, 19, is jailed on criminal assault charges after police say he confessed. The 8-year-old victim was attacked at her home and sent to Memorial Hospital. her condition described as not serious. Hearing date not immediately known.
County Board weighs a 1.50 levy with 1 for schools and 0.50 for the general fund while deciding on the next year budget. Road budget for 1941 totals 83 791.22 and is approved unanimously. Passenger traffic on this German Rhine line was cut after an attack on a freight train near Isten by a French warplane.
Paris reports the German blitz through southern Holland and Belgium appears slowed by Allied mobile forces and air support. Spokesmen say the battle of the west has begun and main Allied forces are nearing the line ahead of schedule under Generalissimo Gamelin.
The French war office challenged Hitler's claim of capturing the Liege citadel in Belgium, saying Eben Emael is the only fortress seized so far. Churchill warned of a great battle as German forces push through Belgium and Holland using a alleged secret weapon.

Friends report Harry A. Schmidt of this city underwent a major operation at Duke University Friday morning. His condition is excellent and he hopes to return to Winchester in about ten days.
