Virginia Gayda, an interpreter of Mussolini, warned in Giornale d Italia that Britain is waging an offensive campaign to split the Rome Berlin axis and paint Italy and Germany as dangerous.
Valentine Bliss 79 a prominent silk manufacturer in Pennsylvania and New Jersey died today in Scranton. A native of Cranfield England he came to the United States in 1879 and built a silk business at Paterson New Jersey.
Since January 1, 5,033 persons have received Winchester Chamber of Commerce literature on local tourist attractions. Andrew Bell, secretary, reports inquiries from all over the United States and several foreign countries. Most inquiries come from the State Commission on Conservation and Development, with others from the State Chamber of Commerce Shenandoah Valley Inc. or direct requests. Each inquirer receives a pamphlet on historical sites plus maps including the Skyline Drive route.

Lucius F. Bailiff, an eighty one year old former teacher and naturalist from Danville Illinois, built a funeral pyre he never used. His Knoll Cove farm near Williamsport Indiana hosted a public funeral sermon last June with a thousand visitors. Bailiff keeps a gold leaf bound volume inscribed Hope it does you some good given to his son. He adopted a creed that declares Nature there is no God but nature.

The American Red Cross central committee announced an additional 10000 appropriation for Spanish civil war relief. Ernest J. Swift, national vice chairman heading foreign operations, said the funds would be used by the International Red Cross impartially to relieve suffering on both sides. He reported the grant at the annual Red Cross Convention noting relief is hindered by lack of funds.

Seattle May 13. Dean Edward H. Lauer of the University of Washington released a campus slang dictionary with definitions for student terms such as Fever Frau Cement Mixer Rolls rough Tintype and Gold mine. Felix Bauman of Germany aided the project during his visit.
Winchester speaker W. W. Glass has been invited by the Turner Ashby Chapter and Stonewall Memorial Association to address Virgina's sons buried in Stonewall Cemetery on Memorial Day June 6. Glass, son of a Confederate veteran, is a noted orator from Winchester and will deliver the address on the occasion.
Cleveland May 13. General Motors Fisher Body plant here closed by a sit-down strike affecting about six to seven thousand workers. Union leader Louis Spisak cited layoffs and a speed-up as causes while plant manager Lincoln R. Sceafe said operations halted by one department. Management refuses talks while workers stay at their jobs.
Martinsburg lawyer Harry H. Byrer told Winchester Rotary Club that the president’s proposal to enlarge the Supreme Court undermines judicial independence and risks a court under one man’s control. He warned against a Court with all justices aligned to presidential views, noting the Marbury precedent and stressing no usurpation.

Grafton T Michael of Winchester died at his home 373 Gray Avenue after an illness in his seventy seventh year. Born July 25 1860 in Okonoka West Virginia he served as justice of the peace and notary. Survived by widow Nora E Power Michael no children. Funeral Saturday at 11 at Salem Church Slanesville with Rev Harry Wheeler and Elder William Smoot officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. Pallbearers named B Wilson John Power Jr Louis Stump Chester Hiett Charles Dunlap. He was a member of the Methodist church.

Dick Merrill and Jack Lambie face more delays on their Atlantic return as crosswinds hinder flight. A film supplier backed out, offering only still coronation pictures instead of motion pictures, reducing promised earnings. Previously delays were blamed on auto transport of London footage.
Washington Virginia Maryland Coach Company is to have a May 24 hearing before the National Labor Relations Board in Washington. The NLRB regional director said the Association of Street and Electric Employees accuses the firm of opposing the dominant labor organization. The case references a new union formed by John Paul Jones, while the Supreme Court upheld lower court orders requiring the company to stop discriminating against 18 employees who were union members.
In Washington on May 13, Chairman Pittman blocked immediate Senate consideration of a Nye resolution asking Ambassador William E. Dodd to name the American billionaire alleged to back an American dictatorship. The measure was sent to the Foreign Relations Committee for study. Dodd had earlier said a unnamed billionaire offered support for an American dictatorship.

Government economists report a rising farm share of the food dollar as farm product prices climb. For the first three months of this year 47 cents of every dollar spent at grocers, butchers and bakers went to farmers, up from 33 cents in 1932 and 44 cents last year.
