Women gain government leader but lose in House of Commons
Britain elected Margaret Thatcher as prime minister, the first woman to hold the post in Europe, while the number of women in the House of Commons fell from 27 to 19. The Conservative win left only three of 65 junior ministers women. Feminist groups split on Thatcher, with Equal Opportunities Commission welcoming a woman in the top job and Rights for Women lamenting limited progress for women in Parliament and politics. More than 150 women ran, but only eight Conservatives and 11 Labourites won, leaving 3 percent of seats for women.
