The former Ethiopian emperor seeks to halt military tactics and recognition of conquest invoking the Stimson Doctrine but court action has no effect. International morale is described as vanished as legal arguments fail to stop actions.
Washington May 12 The American government reiterates non recognition of conquered territory despite Britain and France backing recognition of Ethiopia at Geneva Secretary of State Hull stated the policy remains unchanged and noted an outline given July 16 last year defining principles for international order and peaceful relations.
In Geneva on May 12 the Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie failed to halt efforts by Britain and France to recognize Italy’s conquest. The League of Nations council prepared to release members from non recognition pledges as the majority backed recognition. Selassie made a despairing plea for a full assembly hearing, but the council proceeded toward a vote.
May 12 marks the 52nd anniversary of Winchester’s worst hail storm. The 1886 event brought massive hailstones that killed orchard fruit and shattered many windows. A Baltimore shipment of glass was hastily bought and sold at cost to avert shortages.
Two Handley high school students earn recognition in state literary contests. Vance Larkin wins State Class B trophy for best short story and receives a hand crafted plaque for his school. James Cave earns an award for best essay on The Advantages of American Citizenship and may gain further state level honors.
Negotiations are under way to locate a shoe manufacturing plant in Winchester. A local promoter and a Winchester resident pace discussions near the Winchester Woolen Mills site, with possible concessions and an early formal announcement planned.
In Dyersburg Tennessee a bitter county primary row escalated to gunfire. Former deputy sheriff Luther Hinson age 52 was killed and deputy James Riggins age 28 was critically wounded and taken to a hospital where his death was expected momentarily.
Shanghai dispatch reports American bluejackets patrolling Kulangsu as thousands of refugees and soldiers flood the island after Japanese forces capture Amoy. Japanese say Amoy is fully occupied and press reports claim several Chinese divisions are nearly annihilated while Lunghai railroad fronts advance. The U S Navy prepares to deploy Marblehead to Amoy to protect Americans and evacuees.
Clarke County Woman's Club hosted Clifford K. Berryman, Washington Star cartoonist, at Pitts Clarke theatre. The 3 PM talk, titled Presidents I Have Known, drew sketches of public figures from Grover Cleveland onward, reflecting fifty years of Washington political reporting. Berryman is nearing 47 years with Washington newspapers.
Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes urged American lawyers to be vigilant in promoting good judges to preside over the nation’s courts. He warned against undermining judicial independence while noting the bar should influence appointments and elections to uphold standards. President Roosevelt echoed the call in a letter praising the legal profession’s role.
President Getulio Vargas orders full military and police action after a 3 1/2 hour uprising aimed at toppling his government. Rebels attacked the palace and key sites, 12 killed and 22 injured. About 500 rebels jailed, with rapid military trials and possible death sentences for leaders. Salgado, Greenshirts head, remains fugitive.
The Carnegie Institution Seismological Laboratory recorded a 7:52.29 a.m. quake 6,700 miles west of Pasadena indicating the disturbance was near New Guinea.
Mrs Samuel D Preston wins the Miles B Dean award for the top exhibit at the Spring Flower Show of the Old Fredericktown Garden Club held at the Colonial Art and Craft Shop on East Piccadilly Street. Other awards honor miniature, blue ribbon and honorable mention winners with multiple club members named.
Wilbur Johnston and George Jones design a special cachet that draws attention from stamp collectors nationwide. Covers arrive from Vermont, Illinois, Florida, and nearby states ahead of Winchester May 19 air mail flight marking Air Mail Week. Letters must be at the post office by morning May 19 for the first official flight to Washington.
US and German agents clashed before the Mixed Claims Commission over Dr Richard Paulig's request to inspect FBI files linked to the Black Tom and Kingsland disasters. Justice Roberts would examine the files if AG Cummings agrees to determine if any undisclosed matter affects the case.
Retail sales in 1935 for Winchester Clarke and Frederick counties totalled 8 251 000 with Winchester leading at 6 301 000. Clarke county 1 331 000 and Frederick 619 000. Food store sales 1 639 000 and automotive groups 2 012 000. Wholesale sales 3 222 000 and area payrolls 2 915 000. Farm data shows 1 919 Frederick and 584 Clarke farms. farm land values total 9 278 000 and 5 883 000 respectively.
In Washington May 12 vigorous opposition arose in the House merchant marine committee to Baltimore Mail Steamship Company plans to shift from trans Atlantic to inter coastal service. Company seeks to discontinue Baltimore Norfolk to Le Havre and Hamburg and run New York to San Francisco. Byrd and Robertson pledge effort to guarantee continued Baltimore European service. Virginia horticulturalists and chamber of commerce officials urged subsidies to keep the line operating. Byrd telegraphed he attended an Admiralty meeting and is pressing for continuation. Robertson said he will use all power to secure ongoing operation.
The Handlian yearbook 1938 from Handley High School is ready for distribution. It dedicates the book to Prof W H Mellwee veteran director of the Handley bands and orchestras and music teacher. The staff includes Miss Whitehurst editor and August Cahill business manager with numerous editors and staffers. An in memory tribute to Vida Ruth Doyle and Ella Delina Doyle is included.
The Rev Ronald S S Wilson of Loudoun Street Presbyterian announces a Cubbing School at the church next Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7 30 for training parents and others in the Cub Scout program. Parents of boys 9 to 11 urged to attend if they want their boys to join Cub Scouts. The non denominational movement will reorganize the Winchester Cub Pack per Boy Scout National Headquarters guidance. Training team includes Paul Siebert Leonard Sirbaugh and James Borden.
Handley school will graduate approximately 115 students with baccalaureate services on Sunday June 5 in the high school auditorium. Dr F Berry Plummer of Hagerstown Md will deliver the baccalaureate sermon as organized by the Winchester Ministerial Association. Commencement exercises follow Thursday June 9 with Hon H G Kump former governor of West Virginia delivering the commencement address.
Thousands of theoretical enemy infantrymen parachuted in between midnight and dawn as part of a war game by the general headquarters air force. Maj. Gen. Frank M. Andrews announced that the blacks, a mythical European and Asiatic coalition, had footholds at Kitty Hawk North Carolina and an island off Maine near Boothbay Harbor.
A robber brandishing a weapon snatched a pouch of diamonds from Jacob Ingber on a Sixth Avenue elevated train. He bolted to the Park Place platform before the doors closed, preventing pursuit.
