Heavy rains pounded the Shenandoah Valley with record May rainfall. Winchester, Harrisonburg, and Frederick County faced flooded cellars, ruined gas and electric service, and disrupted rail lines as Capon River rose rapidly and storms forced churches to halt services.
Harrisonburg Virginia endures its worst flood in a generation as river rise swamps Main Street. Water, driven by a heavy cloudburst, floods basements, halts traffic, and traps cars along pikes to Winchester and Staunton. Four inches of rain inundates the valley. Waynesboro reports worse flooding as bridges wash out and trains halt. Dr J E Wine reports harrowing trips and stranded vehicles with no fatalities. Continued on Page Seven.
Funeral services were held for Mr. and Mrs. William Miller and three of their four children swept to death when their automobile trunk ran off a bridge into a creek in Berkeley County. Only eight year old Alton Miller survived, staying with relatives. The four children Mamie Marie Evelyn Otis ranged from one to seven. the parents, both residents of Buckl orchard, had recently moved to a property on Agee C. McIngire's farm. The interment followed a day of solemn rites conducted by Rev. J. Ly Ream with three undertakers in attendance.
The notice urges delaying spraying until at least ninety percent of apple blossoms have fallen to protect bees essential for pollination. It warns that spraying early can kill bees and harm fruit production.
New York May 12. A drastic decline in unfilled orders at United States Steel and falling crude oil prices fueled morning selling. By noon prices steadied as investors bought rails and call money opened at 3 1 2 percent. Total sales reached about 750 000 shares.
The calyx spray is described as the year's most important spray to control scab, the cooling moth, and the leaf roller. Heavy rains threaten timely application in many orchards, but effort should be made to spray before the calyx closes to ensure perfect fruit.

Seven men escaped death after being imprisoned an hour and a half in an ice box by six armed bandits at an east side New York dance hall. The gunmen robbed the workers of money and valuables, broke into the safe, and fled with 1500 dollars in cash and jewelry after a wedding.

The American Legion and Auxiliary announce postponement of their regular meeting to May 6th. Mrs. W. A. Baker presides, with J. H. Rosenberger as commander. Meeting location undisclosed.
A meeting to plan the Decoration Day observance at the National Cemetery on May 30 will be held at 7 20 this Monday evening at the home of Mrs. W R Willis on South Market Street.
