W. W. Bailey, affectionately called Pop, jokes about not being as strong as before but still stays active. He prunes yew bushes on Millwood Avenue and tends a garden and flowers with his daughter-in-law Irene Bailey nearby. Tomorrow he will celebrate his 102nd birthday with a quiet family observance.
American and North Vietnamese negotiators settled procedural matters for Monday's Paris talks with a positive tone. U.S. deputy lead er Cyrus Vance said formal arrangements are complete and opening statements will be made by Hariman and Xuan Thuy.
Festival headquarters asks all young people who did not turn in May 2 and 3 costumes to submit them immediately. Costumes are catalogued and stored for summer. Lost items from the parades may be brought to Festival headquarters, open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A weeklong siege of severe thunderstorms ripped Texas from the Panhandle to the Gulf bringing hail heavy rain and tornadic winds. Weather warnings persisted through the night in south-central and southeastern areas as the storms entered their sixth straight day. Six people died in weather related crashes and flash floods.
President Johnsons top economic adviser Arthur Okun and Federal Reserve official Alfred Hayes urged voluntary restraint on wages and prices to fight inflation. They told the Business Council that wage growth must stay aligned with productivity gains even if a 10 percent tax surcharge passes Congress, calling for careful reevaluation of guidepost policy.
Norfolk AP A federal judge ruled tugboat owner Harry A. Hays liable for about 245000 in damages from the March 16 1967 collision of the tug Prince with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The barge Nile Barge Line Inc suffered 165000 in bridge damage and 80000 in barge damage while transporting 1800 tons of sulfuric acid.
Fifteen miners escaped to safety after five days underground. Ten miners are presumed dead after the incident. A man at right remains unidentified in the AP wirephoto accompanying the report.
Reports from Saigon say U S forces claim 442 North Vietnamese soldiers killed in five battles below the DMZ in 24 hours while 24 Americans died and 54 wounded. In Saigon 50 Viet Cong were killed in and around the capital amid heavy air strikes. Civilians flee as 80 000 refugees pour from the city.
Ottie Junior Walton recounts being one of 15 coal miners rescued after five days trapped in a flooded West Virginia mine. He describes fear, prayer, humor, and hope while awaiting outside rescuers and a life-saving air hole.
Gov Mills E Godwin Jr urged the Virginia Association for Retarded Children to persist in selling the public on the proposed 81 million bond issue. He noted some worry they may hammer away too insistently but stressed the need to keep the message in the public conscience.
Fifteen miners emerged on a belt system after five days trapped by floodwater in a coal mine in the mountains. Ten others were believed dead, swept away when water surged through an adjacent abandoned shaft. The rescued men, all weary but in good shape, were greeted by families and reporters as they exited into floodlight glare.
A frontal system settled over Virginia today bringing cloudy skies and scattered rainfall, with the Old Dominion expected to see damp weekend weather.
