Doughton Signals Caution on New Taxes With Truman Talks
Senator Doughton head of the House Ways and Means committee said after a White House visit that rigid government economies are preferable to tax increases. He noted the committee has not moved to draft a tax bill aligned with Truman’s request for $4 billion in new taxes and aims to avoid tax hikes until social security changes are reviewed, likely delaying tax discussions for a month. An economy bloc in the Senate pushes for five percent spending cuts to balance the treasury with advice from Dr. Edwin G Norse against a large tax rise.
