A dramatic incident occurred in Ostend Harbor as a vessel named Cival Force sank after a successful exploit. Authorities report minimal injuries while salvors assess the scene and secure the harbor.
In the Somme and Ancre valleys British forces recaptured a front line trench northwest of Albert and held against counter attacks. French troops seized the Grivennes park and occupied terrain, taking 258 prisoners and four officers, with American troops holding part of the line nearby. Hostile artillery remained active overnight across Picardy and Lys fronts.
Ridgeway announces a daily clearance sale of the entire stock. Auction begins at 7 30 p m and runs each evening until all stock is sold. Goods of many descriptions available during the Ridgeway sale.
News from Winchester reports the death on March 30 of Frank H. Jackson, designer and supervising architect of the Rouse City Hall. He also planned fire escapes and had completed blueprints sent to a Norfolk firm for bids. Jackson, about 62, was a prominent regional architect.
James Chanconas a Greek national formerly at John Dillis Greek restaurant North Main st applied for exemption from military service claiming alien status and pending naturalization. He admitted filing first papers but not full citizenship and was advised to seek action through the Greek consul. The board denied both exemption grounds and unless overturned he faces draft on May 25.
Home talent revue presented at the Empire Theater begins at 8 30 PM. Ticket prices listed at 25 35 and 50 cents.
Secretary McAdoo told Congress a massive revenue bill is needed to cover the war costs. Army plans aim at 15 billion, ships 2.6 billion, navy 1.5 billion, with more estimates likely. House Ways and Means Chairman Kitchen urged heavy taxes on excess profits and profits tied to the war.
Reports from London say Brussels is jammed with wounded soldiers and public buildings crowded with casualties. Information states thousands of German wounded are arriving in Belgium by cattle cars and coal cars, amid heavy activity toward the southwest.
Seven soldiers were killed and ten injured when a troop train from Camp Jackson to Greeneville on the Southern Railway derailed after passing a trestle near Camp Jackson. The 321st Infantry members were aboard. names withheld pending canvass.

The First Troop of Boy Scouts reports selling 1431 bonds totaling 145 900 during the third Liberty loan. Local breakdown shows city 771 bonds 83 900. county 357 bonds 87 900. other counties 126 bonds 12 100. out of town 423 750. Members canvassed Frederick County April 27 to May 4 and earned national honor for 100 percent participation.
Pro v ost Marshall General Crowder released state quotas for the second draft of 800000 men. Virginia must furnish 17063 draftees. Drafts will use 39.731 percent of Class 1 totals, with 2421480 in Class 1 now, and more may be added after deferments reviewed. About 264888 men may be rejected for physical disqualifications. Date of draft not yet fixed due to legislation on student exemptions.
Washington May 10 General Crowder announced that within ten days a nationwide search will begin for registered men who were called to the colors but failed to report. Federal, state and municipal authorities will cooperate in the largest man hunt the country has ever seen.
John G. Bowman announced his engagement to Miss M. Camilla Zaritz of Coldstream Ontario Canada as drafted men departed for Fort Tomas Kentucky. The marriage will occur after he secures leave from camp. Zaritz, a George School Philadelphia graduate, was known to local students.
The Hampshire county drive closed with subscriptions totaling 146 850 dollars against a county quota of 79 900. This performance pleased campaign officials and residents alike for its strong support and turnout.

F. M. Richardson led services with a floral tribute outpouring and a quartet performance. Committal at Mount Hebron Cemetery featured a choir and pallbearers from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington.
The Market Street Methodist Episcopal Sunday school will celebrate Mother's Day Sunday afternoon with a program by the orchestra starting at 3 PM after a 2 16 service. Rev T K Cromer will give the address replacing the absent pastor, who will be at Greenwood Church. The Sunday school will shift to morning sessions starting the third Sunday in May.
War Department released a brief casualty list. Four KIA, one died of wounds, three died of diseases, one died in an accident, three severely wounded, seven lightly wounded. Names included Private J. Scully of Toledo identified as a Tuscania disaster victim, and G. H. Kissel of New York reported missing in action.
A blonde Chicago woman, described as young and attractive, was compelled to leave Trenton during a city cleanup. A plainclothes officer placed her on a train to New York, and as it departed she kissed the officer goodbye. Chambersville, Virginia reports Miss Edna Legg visiting Wadeeville friends.
Chicago reports eleven dead and scores injured after a Midwestern storm outbreak. Des Moines and nearby towns tally multiple fatalities and extensive property damage across Iowa and Illinois with crops, livestock, and buildings destroyed and rescue operations ongoing.
A Lisbon dispatch reported police in Oporto thwarted a conspiracy against Portugal's new republican government. All conspirators were arrested and 63 bombs were seized, tied to elements that disrupted recent elections.
A massive bush-fire near Tilwood, 30 miles from Atlantic City, endangers thousands of dollars of government material and several uncompleted General Electric buildings. Several hundred men battle the blaze as authorities fight to save the plant and surrounding facilities.
