Northern Virginia Power Company acknowledged 84 employees from Winchester Strasburg and Berryville at a Martinsburg dinner last week. Each honoree has more than 15 years of service with the utility, with several named in the ceremony lineup.
Washington May 8 union and company officials agreed to a pay hike averaging 4.40 weekly ending the coast to coast long distance walkout. NFTW members may still refuse to cross picket lines as settlement awaits approval in New York. Government officials predicted rapid end to related labor actions.
E L Ford of Stephens City announced his candidacy to challenge Harry F Byrd Jr in the Virginia State Senate. Ford, a former Shenandoah County resident, noted Byrd’s unapproved votes and urged a new deck for the state while citing his own Roosevelt era public service and legal career.
Negotiations between the Virginia Federation of Telephone Workers and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia recessed without agreement on disputed issues delaying a new contract. The union held to a $6 weekly wage increase, reduced earlier from $12, with four weeks remaining, while the company showed reluctance to concede. Arthur L. Lambdin said the company would study new union demands and might respond with a counter proposal in a few days.
Winchester council met Tuesday night in a lengthy session extending to 11:50 p m with little concrete action. The finance chair Glaize reported about 500 in Recreation Department bills and sought 800 transfer from an unused assistant fund. Bills cover summer program improvements including baseball park fence and grandstand repairs. A motion by E E Baker to transfer passed unanimously. (Continued on Page 2 Col 1)
Director General Tom Bald ridge reports four major newsreel firms will show scenes from the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in 17000 U S theatres starting May 8 in major cities. Paramount News Universal Newsreel MGM News and Fox Movietone will carry the footage. Lamar Keen notes national recognition of the festival by the newsreels.
An administration plea for perhaps 75 million dollars to reinforce South Korea faced Congress as the House moved into vote over aid to Greece and Turkey to resist Communist domination.
The report lists a high of 53 degrees and a low of 35, compared to last year’s 64 high and 43 low. Weather observers note cooler conditions than a year ago.
The Brazilian government moved to ban the Communist Party after the Supreme Electoral Tribunal ruled it illegal, closing 445 clubs and cells. President Dutra then suspended the Brazil Workers Confederation and affiliated unions for six months, with federal police and troops securing key areas.
Edwin Chewning a 24 year old Navy veteran of World War 2 was knocked into a circular saw by a rolling tie and lost both legs yesterday at a saw mill in Fredericksburg. One leg was severed and the other badly mangled before his amputation at Mary Washington Hospital.
Three Dartmouth College war veterans, all seniors, died when their car collided head on with a truck in North Hartland Vermont while en route to New Jersey for a weekend prom. The accident left five train crew injured in Philadelphia after a switching engine struck an open switch and derailed. The Jewish Agency urged the United Nations to remove barriers to a Jewish national home in Palestine.
President Truman will travel to the Gettysburg battlefield on May 30 to take part in Memorial Day services there. He is to participate in the observance alongside local officials and veterans groups.
Ohio Senate passes a bill limiting job protection for striking public workers including teachers. The measure, endorsed by Gov. Herbert, would let agencies auto dismiss strikers but allow rehiring on five year probation with no wage increases for three years across state county municipal school and other public workers. Tony Martin jailed for speeding 55 mph on a Los Angeles boulevard faces a two day term after pleading guilty.

The Senate approved an amendment banning union controlled health and welfare funds and the involuntary check-off of dues by a 48 to 40 vote. Taft led the drive, aided by Byrd and Morse, with exceptions for funds equally represented by employers and employees. Penalty for violations includes up to a $10,000 fine and one year in jail.
Oklahoma City May 8 A 35 year old State Rep Jimie Scott is jailed on an assault with intent to kill charge after firing at State Senator Tom Anglin in the Senate chamber. Anglin was wounded in the hip while Scott fled and was captured in the washroom. Both men from Holdenville. Scott says divorce and property disputes sparked the shootout. Anglin denies threats and calls for mental health assessment. Anglin remains hospitalized with a non life threatening wound.
President Truman announced at a news conference that he will push Congress to pass a university training law this session. He expects a forthcoming report from a clergy and education committee. Some lawmakers fear time is short before adjournment on July 31.
President Miguel Aleman returned to Mexico City aboard President Truman's plane The Sacred Cow and was greeted by an enormous crowd estimated at 300000 to 400000 at the airport He appeared with cabinet members and his 14 year old son Miguelito amid cheering and shouts of viva Aleman.
Martinsburg Control Liners club plans a model aviation demonstration at City Airport Sunday afternoon. The event, tied to a cross country light plane race to Winchester, is sponsored by Cumberland Exchange Club. C. W. Hedges highlighted gas powered models controlled from the ground by wires, able to loop and spin, with a jet propelled model also to be shown.
Dr. T. Wood Clarke told the New York State Medical Society that certain foods pollen and dust trigger cerebral allergies in some children causing irritability violence or disobedience. Removing triggers improved behavior and some cases of headaches epilepsy and nervous disorders may stem from cerebral allergy.
Washington May 8 The House moved to vote on a proposed 75 million dollar Greek Turkish aid package amid debate over restricting discussion. House leaders warned against isolationism while Rayburn urged immediate support to Greece and Turkey to counter Communist expansion, warning delays could leave them exposed.
The Rev. William E. Eisenberg pastor of Grace Lutheran Church since 1944 is elected president of the Winchester Ministerial Association. New officers include Rev. P. G. Senger as vice president and Dr. L. F. Havermale as secretary treasurer. Eisenberg, native of Staunton, is a graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.
