Opening of Suez Canal Soon After Thorough Clearing
Mashour Ahmed Mashour, head of the Suez Canal Authority, says the canal will be the cleanest waterway in the world when it opens on June 5. Repairs include dredging, refurbished signal stations, and dredging to widen the channel for super tankers. Thirty-five ships trapped since 1967 will be towed out May 7, and 150 veteran pilots are returning from various harbors. Toll rates remain under study with a government decision expected within two weeks.
