A Ferris wheel at St. Joseph's School annual festival toppled Friday night injuring 17 children and 4 adults. Most treated and released from Petersburg General Hospital. Operator Wes Price blamed a broken axle and panicked riders. Sister Joan Annette suffered a cut knee while aiding others.
Today's high reached 67 with a night drop to 44 at the Fruit Research Laboratory and 40 in town. Tomorrow stays cloudy and cool. Fifteen seagulls have moved into the old Salem Stone quarry on Rt. 11, idle since the company left a year ago, per Michael Lee.
A state Senate committee released a report alleging widespread Communist and homosexual activity at UC Berkeley. The findings become a campaign issue as Governor Edmund Brown faces pressure to act, with Reagan aides promising to use the UC matter against Brown. UC President Kerr denied the charges as inaccurate and distorted and challenged proof of leftist dominance on campus.
Noel Allison, a Roanoke mechanic, sparked a labor walkout at Hemingway Transport Inc that grew to almost 500 workers across seven terminals in two states. After three days idle, operations returned to normal when Allison secured his union contract, prompting drivers and others to resume trucking duties.

In central Viet Nam near Bong Son and 280 miles northeast of Saigon, U S command said a reinforced Viet Cong battalion was wiped out in two days of savage fighting as helicopters of the 1st Cavalry Division led the attack. Casualties totaled 416 enemy dead with 40 captured or detained. The action coincided with Ky's pledge to stay as South Vietnam prime minister for another year amid political tempers.
Ralph L. Hardy longtime City Council member withdraws from reelection on June 14 sending a resignation letter to Winchester Elections Board chair Richard K. Eddy. No contest exists for Hardy seat in the second ward while a four-man race forms in the first ward with incumbents Garber Butler and challengers Dutton Bayliss.
In Shanghai Teng Hsiao-peng called for a united front of Marxist Leninist parties and revolutionary forces against a claimed U S Soviet holy alliance. He said China and Albania agreed to mobilize global revolutionary unity after talks with Albanian leaders. Chou En Lai attended the event.
Senate hearing reveals Army discarded hundreds of used Jeeps and heavy equipment in Asia. Investigators say $4.47 repairs could fix them, yet the items are given to AID for foreign aid, while an unfilled need exists in Vietnam.
A county committee appointed by the State Department of Education recommends adding a new junior high school, another elementary, and an extension to James Wood High School to meet rapid growth. They propose reorganizing to 6 3 3, building a three-grade junior high south of Winchester, and closing five small elementary schools while repurposing Miller School as a county admin building.
Premier Nguyen Cao Ky said the military government would stay in power for at least another year to allow a civilian government through elections. He warned he and allies would fight any neutralist or Communist regime and did not rule out his own candidacy. The plan involves a Sept. 15 timeframe and a legislative vote after an elected civilian government forms.
