Producers Insist They Cant Stand Out in Milk Price Now
In a statement to the State Milk Commission hearing, Inchester Cooperative Milk Producers' Assn cites a steep drop in area production as proof that herds are unprofitable. The group argues the recent price rise will push producers red again and shrink dairy output. It notes the average cost to reduce 100 pounds of Grade I milk is $6.32 and wage levels are high in farming areas. The association recalls years of Winchester prices below regional levels and describes the Sept price hike from 5.40 to 6.00 as overdue amid a persistent need to import milk to meet demand.
