F A Read Jr announced extra police will protect artistic floats due to valuable materials used in decoration. Souvenir hunters will be arrested. A dozen officers guard the end of the parade line as the peony festival float carries Chinese furniture worth several hundred dollars. Floats will ship to Van Wert Ohio for the Peony Festival there. Local beauty shops sponsor the floats and the unit size has grown to over twenty feet.

A fourteenth annual Apple Blossoms festival draws thousands from Baltimore Washington Richmond Philadelphia and nearby cities for a Saturday celebration. Miss Gretchen Bigelow Thomson of New Orleans was crowned Queen Shenandoah XIV at 3 PM as a large Winchester crowd filled Handley Stadium for the two day spring festival. Cadets from Massanutten Military Academy provided a military escort, and the Queen and her 32 person court witnessed the pageant When Beauty Came.
