Flax crop outlook grows with diversifying farming
Federal and state agencies encourage flax planting in the northern Great Plains to diversify the spring wheat belt. Area rose to 2,061,000 acres in 1928 with production at about 17.42 million bushels, aided by wilt resistant varieties like North Dakota Resistant No 114. Preliminary 1924 estimates suggest about 8.88 million acres sown, up 63.6 percent, much of it on older land. A mixed flax and wheat cropping method tested in Minnesota and North Dakota reduces weeds and heat sickness, easing handling and boosting diversification.
