The Associated Press reports ten months of war in China with Chinese legions resisting and striking back as Japan suffers defeats. Tens of millions displaced or dead, and observers ponder a possible turning of the tide amid Japan's continental expansion and US tensions.
The Star sponsors a district marbles tournament with a free week long vacation for one boy or girl from Winchester Clarke Warren or Strasburg districts. Hollywood reports friends of Jackie Coogan hint he may become a father by year end. Coogan, facing a $4,000,000 accounting suit by his mother and step-father, remained silent as Betty Grable, his bride, labeled him the family spokesman.

New York May 6. Robert Irwin, 29, will plead insanity at trial for the Easter Sunday 1937 slayings of Frank Byrnes a waiter Veronica Gedeon a photographers model and her mother. Indicted for first degree murder in all three deaths, Irwin’s lawyer sought two psychiatrists after a lunacy commission deemed him sane. No trial date set.
Thirty five people remained in custody or out on bail as State Police escalated a dragnet for seventy two more indicted by a Philadelphia grand jury probing vice. Bail amounts ranged from five thousand to forty thousand dollars, totaling five hundred twenty five thousand dollars.
