Freeze in Steel Wages Seen Factor in Collapse of Talks
Washington The steel wage dispute talks collapsed as Supreme Court wage freezes pending a ruling on government seizure influenced both sides. CIO United Steelworkers and U S Steel et al blamed the stand while Truman pressed for action. Benjamin Fairless and Philip Murray led day and night sessions seeking a 175 cent wage rise plus fringe benefits, with the industry claiming a 179 cent package. The average industry wage was just under two dollars an hour at breakdown. The wage freeze earlier restored bargaining leverage, and a mid afternoon push toward agreement was interrupted by news of the looming court ruling.
