The wartime food program eases restrictions by making pork veal lamb and mutton rationfree along with other meats. Dairy and margarine limits loosen slightly as officials warn the relief may be temporary and future supplies depend on farm output and overseas shipments.

Dr Douglas Southall Freeman’s original manuscript on Stonewall Jackson’s Shenandoah Valley campaign will rest in the West Virginia department of archives and history. The win, arranged with the book and author war bond committee, raised one million dollars in war bonds for the state. The work formed part of Lee’s Lieutenants and Freeman’s study of Confederate command.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church plans a non sectarian Boy's Athletic Club in Winchester open to all city boys ages 9 to 16. About 12 members to start with committees to draft rules and remodel the church basement for a club room. Dr E C Stuart Sr has examined members health and Otis Snag Sargent will speak at the first meeting.
Winchester Post 2123 VFW will host the 7th District Meet at Yorks Hall Sunday at 5 PM. Posts and auxiliaries from Broadway Sperryville Lexington Front Royal Staunton Harrisonburg Waynesboro Edinburg and Churchville plan to attend. District Commander B De Showalter will preside. Returned WWII veterans will be introduced and talks by Commander Williams and Miss Brown State President of the Auxiliary are planned.

London May 4 The Yugoslav National Liberation Council and King Peter show no path to agreement while the war lasts, says Maj Vladimir Velevit head of Tito's mission in London. He singles out General Draja Mihailovic as their chief foe and notes Tito seeks a postwar free election. Tito's forces claim progress against Germany in Serbia Slovenia and Bosnia with heavy losses for the enemy.
A Gore High School student fire fighting crew helped battle a forest blaze about five miles west of Winchester on Route 50, burning roughly 15 acres and likely started by a passing train. The effort, praised by Fire Chief F W Pingley, marks a first patrol for the local unit under the Forest Fire Fighting Service. The group also aided in quelling a separate incendiary fire near Cherry Grove, four acres in size, five miles southwest of Hayfield.

London May 4. Nazi broadcasts claim Adolf Hitler shifted Lt. Gen. Kurt Student and seasoned parachute units from Italy to France to strengthen the Atlantic Wall. The report says troops in danger zones await an Allied assault and predicts attempts to land behind fortifications will meet stiff German resistance already tested on the south Italian front.
New York May 4 A D Day invasion prayer issued by Bishop Henry St George Tucker urges divine protection for forces and calls churches to keep doors open for a “prayer invasion” as Governor Dewey proclaims prayer for armed forces safety. Residents may obtain copies at Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester.
Calvin E. Omps, 52, died at noon at Winchester Memorial Hospital from injuries in a farm accident near Stephens City. He was found under his tractor last Tuesday with a bolt pierced his skull. a failed emergency operation preceded his death. Omps was a longtime orchardist in the county.

In Europe Red forces clash with Germans in Poland near Szow and Tiraspol while oil fields near Insi a see heavy fighting. In Burma battles persist along the Burma India front as Japan pushes toward Kohima and Arakan fronts see repulsion. In China Japanese forces attack rail town Hsuan g as they expand in Honan province.
Five Japanese columns push north along the Hankow Peiping railway in Henan as Chinese reports say a force nears Hsuchang within 20 miles while other columns advance from Sin Yang. The communique claims about 80 000 Japanese troops engaged with heavy reinforcements in reserve and notes a May 1 Amoy harbor raid by Sky Dragons sinking a 1000 ton freighter.
A military aircraft crashed in woodland and was enveloped in flames upon impact. All three crew members were killed in the incident.
