New York May 4 The CIO chief and United Mine Workers president Joan L. Lewis says a general shutdown of the nations soft coal industry will occur by midnight Friday. The policy committee took no action to defer the stoppage despite the miners idle since April 1 and a failed contract negotiation with bituminous operators. The move would affect about 126000 additional miners, on top of 338000 already idle.

Admits Auto Killed Two Girls in Canton Incident
George of Canton Ohio admitted being the driver of a car that killed two young girls near here and failed to stop. A policeman catching the car 75 miles away led to his confession.
