Soviet dispatch says Adolf Hitler killed himself in Berlin with Goebbels and Krebs, denying last stand at Reich Chancellery. Reports claim Himmler questioned, Berlin fall follows mass German surrenders in Hamburg and northern Austria.
Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force in Paris says a 13 volume study documents German brutality in occupied France. The report cites mass executions torture rape and shelling, noting a fixed policy of ruthless repression and public beatings with many bodies found bearing signs of torture.

In a daylight raid between 50 and 100 B 29s attacked six Kyushu airfields on the thirteenth such strike in five weeks. Maj Gen Curtis Lemay led the Marianas based force against Tachiarai Miyazaki Miyakonojo Kee Kanoya East and Kouu airfields. Bombs were dropped visually and results described as good.

A Hungarian infantry division surrendered intact. Allied forces in the west captured 93797 prisoners on April 30 and May 1.
Alexis Sommaripa, a civilian with the Psychological Warfare Division attached to General Patton's Fourth Armored Division, was killed in action in Germany on March 28. Born in 1900 in Odessa, he was credited with helping surrender at least 1,200 enemy soldiers using a tank radio and loudspeaker. He is survived by a son Amory Sommaripa and a brother George Sommaripa.
