Thousands of visitors from across the country descend on Winchester for the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival events. Miss Washington is to be crowned Queen Shenandoah IX at Handley High School with pageants and parades highlighting the festivities.
Official program for the opening day lists events. Parade of 5000 schoolchildren from West Virginia and Maryland, parade routes via Piccadilly and Loudoun streets, 11 a.m. Parade. 2 p.m. band contests at Handley High School Stadium. 3 p.m. coronation of Queen Shenandoah Ninth Miss Helen Ames Washington of Overbrook PA with Ambassador Paul Claudel. 3.30 p.m. Harvest of the Years pageant by 800 Winchester teachers and pupils. 4.30 p.m. aerial show at Admiral Byrd Airport. 5 p.m. band concerts at multiple venues. 8 p.m. torchlight parade with regional fire companies. 9 p.m. reception of princesses, 9.30 p.m. Apple Blossom balls at George Washington Hotel and other locations.
Winchester Commandery No. 12 arranges ample parking in Alexandria Virginia for Knights Templar and other attendees during the May 12 dedication of the George Washington Masonic Memorial. Walter Shade, recorder, invites those with cars to contact him. Parade begins at 9 30 a m and may take three hours to pass a given point.
The annual Ascension Day service of Winchester Commandery No. 12 Knights Templar will be held at 8 pm next Sunday at Bradock Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Louth. Rev. Thomas Hooper of Culpeper Virginia will preach. he is grand junior warden of the Virginia Masons and a Knights Templar member. Public invited.
The Star will skip publication on Thursday May 5 due to the Apple Blossom Festival. The notice explains the regular publishing schedule is interrupted for the festival.

A large handmade quilt created by the late Mrs. Samuel McDonald of Frederick County and donated by her daughter Mrs. N K Larrick of Hayfield is on display at the Apple Gift Shop on North Loudoun Street. Proceeds will benefit the District Nurse Association. The quilt includes linen spun by Mrs McDonald and pieces made over a year or more.

General Jo Lane Stern Confederate veteran lawyer and former adjutant general of Virginia died at his Richmond home at age 83 after several weeks of serious illness and months of failing health.

Virginia voters must pay poll taxes by May 7 to be eligible for the November 8 general election. City Treasurer W. A Baker notes the law requires taxes be paid six months before, but May 8 is Sunday, so payments are due by close of business May 7.
The local post of Veterans of Foreign Wars shows a 20 by 40 foot flag hung across North Loundown Street above Piccadilly Street. It is billed as the country’s largest flag as a tribute to George Washington for the festival season. Capt. George H. Grimm commands the VFW post.

Mrs. Etta Butts of Grand Rapids Michigan tied her children Ross seven Betty Jane four and Max nine and led them to a well where she drowned them Then she jumped in but neighbors pulled her from the cistern near death She left a note to her husband Carl saying she feared she would die from an operation and the children would be left without her.
The United States Circuit Court of Appeals vacated a writ of superseders against Al Capone after the Supreme Court refused to review his income tax conviction. A mittimus was issued, and Capone was expected to be sent to Leavenworth within 24 hours.
Arthur Linwood Thompson 31 son of Mr and Mrs Thornton Thompson died last Saturday in Winchester Memorial Hospital after an operation. His funeral was held at Christ Episcopal Church Millwood with Rev B D Chambers officiating. He worked for Northern Virginia Power Company of Winchester and was honored with many floral tributes. Interment followed at Green Hill Cemetery Berryville with pallbearers listed.

Twenty four percent of senior girls expressed no career choice while thirty six percent of the boys said they had not decided on a profession.
Charlottesville Virginia report cites unequal educational opportunities and differing social standards as drivers of the high southern homicide rate. William Edgar Byrd Jr of the University of Virginia argues the South leads the nation in homicide, with the U S topping global rates except Italy.

Richmond Virginia resident Robert Wells, 45, father of eight, was instantly killed when an automobile driven by Gene Foster struck him as he walked along the highway near Richmond. Foster said he was en route to Richmond for his first trip in 18 months and tried to pass a car that pulled into the center of the road.
