Festival officials announce actor Pernell Roberts arrives this evening to serve as parade marshal. He attends the visiting mayors luncheon at the George Washington Hotel and greets national JCC president Douglas Blankenship of Atlanta. At 2 p.m. he leads the Grand Feature Parade. A sightseeing tour in the Valley is planned tomorrow evening.
Forecaster warnings failed as temperatures stayed above freezing with a low of 37. City and county offices closed. Bertha Cline, deputy to Municipal Court Judge John Rice, remained on the second floor. Apple Blossom Festival organizers unloaded bleacher seats at Handley Bowl while a tractor drifted into a barn in Frederick County. A drugstore announced 12 noon closing on Thursday and selling chairs at a street corner. emergency contact and business notices listed.
Diplomats fear renewed violence as Haiti bars exit for alleged leaders of plots against Duvalier while refugees seek asylum in embassies. James R. Hoffa testified on labor laws saying he aims to broaden the Teamsters Union’s influence beyond the United States. A single car crash on Interstate 81 six miles north of Martinsburg WV fatally injured Merle Norman Brown 53 of Hagerstown Maryland. Police say he lost control and was ejected from the vehicle.
Grand Feature Parade of the Apple Blossom Festival moves through Winchester tomorrow afternoon. About 9 000 participants 62 floats 85 bands and 193 units will travel a four mile route from downtown to Handley Boulevard led by Pernell Roberts of Bonanza as Grand Marshal. Queen Shenandoah XXXVI Brooke Farland and Her Court decorate floats. Advance antique car section at 1 30 p m main parade at 2 p m expected to last four and a half hours.
Regulations announce no parking Friday May 3 on streets including Cameron Gerrard Wyck Piccadilly Loudoun Cork Braddock Washington Germain Stewart Handley Gerrard and more. North side Piccadilly from Fairmont to Morgan and east Morgan from Piccadilly to Amherst restricted. Leicester Street south side becomes one way east during parade with driveway parking only.
