Navy reports American submarines sunk a Japanese light cruiser and two destroyers in enemy waters along with seven cargo vessels one tanker and a large naval auxiliary. Total Japanese vessels sunk or damaged now tallies 695 with 544 confirmed sunk and 69 warships among them.
A Soviet communique reported about 1500 Axis troops killed in local engagements in Romania and old Poland. It cited 600 Germans killed north of Iasi and a battalion of 800 to 1000 wiped out southeast of Stanislawow, with heavy fighting near Kowel. Soviet long range bombers reportedly set 17 fires at Brest Litovsk rail junction. Berlin claimed Arctic combat renewed near Murmansk.
Justice Department spokesman told the Senate Campaign Expenditures Committee no evidence of violations by the CIO political action committee under federal election law. Attorney General Biddle’s aide James McGranery presented the report in executive session while opponents urged indictments over a large CIO fund raising for political campaigns. Washington May 2 The House Rites Committee favorably reported a resolution to probe the government seizure of Montgomery Ward in Chicago and why the War Production Board gave the mail order firm so much business. Senator Byrd vows a Senate vote on broad inquiry into seizure and removal of Sewell Avery. Ward lawyers counter that Congress limited power to seize retail stores and mail order houses in the Smith Connally era.
London reports British submarines sunk a Japanese destroyer and four other ships while attacking enemy supply lines in Asiatic waters. Some vessels were damaged, and one submarine bombarded Port Blair in the Andaman Islands before escaping shore batteries.
Henry Mears of Stephens City was informed of the death in England of his brother-in-law Walter James Thomas due to German bombing. Thomas perished in an English town midway between London and Dover where his family lived, and Thomas’s sister, Mrs Mears, was injured but later released from hospital.

Dr. Walter S. Hough of the Winchester Research Laboratory said apple blossoms are at their peak in this section now and will not last until the weekend. He noted freezing weather last week did not damage local fruit.
Handley School students plan a Victory pageant on June 14 to celebrate Flag Day and back the 5th War Loan Drive. The event caps the stamp sale drive for Handley High School with a popularity contest voting to crown a Victory Queen and two attendants among senior and junior high girls.
New York May 2 Goodyear vice president Robert S Wilson said synthetic rubber tires are 96 percent as good as natural rubber ones. He told the Sales Executive Club that 10,000,000 passenger tires have been made from synthetic material and annual production may reach 800,000 tons. Wilson warned the future is uncertain but noted rapid development and that synthetic rubber, still in early large scale use after 50 years of natural rubber usage, performs better than expected.
Five county men, eighteen years of age last month, registered with the Frederick County Draft Board in accordance with the Selective Service Law. They were Walter Frank Baker Whitacre Thomas Patrick Madigan Stephens City Lacy H. Anderson Gore Paul Thomas Smith Stephens City and Kenneth William Taylor Cross Junction.
An American carrier task force attacked Truk in the Caroline Islands causing damage to ground installations and ships while shooting down over 30 enemy aircraft. Allied reports also note a separate Tokyo claim of Japanese losses near Hollandia, with no allied confirmation. A single Liberator conducted a daring Truk strike, damaging a vessel and airstrips, the 32nd air strike in seven weeks.
The Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals refused to open an inquiry into whether Norfolk County Circuit Court Judge A. B. Carney should be retired under a 1942 act. The House committee urged the court to decide on removal and, if not, prompt a special General Assembly session for impeachment or joint resolution removal. The court ruled it lacks jurisdiction to order any inquiry into his capacity.
Mrs. H. Clay de Grange announced Mrs. Edgar Whiting as Winchester’s outstanding War Mother for 1944. Whiting has four sons in service and was chosen from many nominees in a statewide Virginia War Mother contest conducted with Radio Station WINC.
Allied dispatch from Naples reports the German attack three miles southwest of Cerreto and in the Cassino sector with a slight beachhead gain. Allied raiders at Cerreto Alto continued, while German air raids Sunday night were repelled as anti aircraft fire drove off most attackers.
About 399 people, mostly county school children, were X rayed by the Frederick County Tuberculosis Association at First Baptist Church this afternoon. Most attendees were bused from county schools, with another clinic planned for May 3 in Clarke county.
