A 1938 McNaught Syndicate profile recalls Charles Evans Hughes as a brilliant legal mind who rose to Governor and the Supreme Court but failed to win the presidency due to aloofness and poor rapport. It notes his early genius and disciplined routine, and how a snub to Governor Hiram Johnson helped tilt California against him in 1916.
