Lafayette Pistols Linked to Washington Heirloom Theft
Local history recounts two heavy horseman pistols used by General Washington. One passed from Bushrod Washington to George Corbin Washington then to Col. Lewis W. Washington, later stolen by Owen Brown during Harper’s Ferry events, recovered by 1860 and housed in Albany. Samuel Skinner Thomas 68, Clarke county commissioner of revenue, died at Winchester Memorial Hospital after illness. A native of Clarke county, he had served since 1936 and was reelected to a fourth term last fall. Funeral services will be held Monday at the Episcopal church in Berryville. He leaves a sister and deputies include David Allen and Esta Brown. Interment at Green Hill Cemetery.

Winchester Festival Sees Big Crowds Yet Only One Reported Accident
Chief J Thomas Boyd said the Winchester event drew the largest crowd he has seen, yet only one accident required a written report. Over two days 37 people were arrested mainly for drunk and disorderly conduct, with two drunken driving cases.
