The Senate approved a $45 monthly combat pay for all men and officers serving in Korea as part of a rider to a cost of living pay increase bill. The measure covers infantrymen and those under actual enemy fire in the Marines and Navy, who are not eligible for other hazard or bonus pay.
Belgrade premier Marshal Tito bluntly warned Western powers that backing Italian claims to the Free Territory of Trieste could cost Yugoslavia and its people. He addressed the parliament urging Italian leader Alcide Gasperi to answer Yugoslavia over a settlement not binding the postwar borders. The talks touched on Trieste’s disputed status and outside influence from the United States Britain and the USSR.
A B-29 Superfortress headed to Korea with bombs aboard crashed on a wooded hill near Ohime City just after leaving Yokota Airbase. Two crew parachuted. nine remain missing. Bombs jettisoned before impact landed harmlessly.
Students from Handley and James Wood High Schools excel at the District High School Literary Contest at Madison College Harrisburg. Winners advance to the state contest in Charlottesville with April Handley honorees including Ann Arthur Patsy Wheeler Jack Carr Nancy Quarles Stephen Brown and Philip Groves. James Wood winners include Robert Madigan and Doug Carper.
No Democratic primary is held in the First Ward as no candidates filed by the February 1 deadline. Winchester voters will see a Second Ward primary to nominate three Common Council candidates from four certified by the Democratic City Committee with one to be eliminated. Independent candidates plan for June 10 facing the three winners. Mayor M. B. Clowe Jr. runs as an independent. Two independents currently seek the Second Ward seat. Third parties may file before deadlines. Polls open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow with First Precinct at City Hall and judges named.
Civic and business leaders from towns in the Shenandoah Valley began arriving in Winchester for a 4 p.m. meeting of Shenandoah Valley Inc and an 8 p.m. rally of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival at the George Washington Hotel. Kenneth R. Hyde of Roanoke, president of the Valley group, will preside. Discussions include U S Route 11 and a new valley strip map.
The Corps To Play The South End and Rouss Drum and Bugle Corps perform downtown Winchester near the George Washington Hotel from 7:30 to 8:00 PM before the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival rally at 6 PM dinner. MGM actress Miss Jean Hagen will appear at the festival rally and dinner.
Charles E. Wilson resigns as mobilization director over steel price policies leaving wage-price controls uncertain as talks resume between industry and CIO United Steelworkers. President Truman names John R. Steelman to lead the Office of Defense Mobilization until a successor is named. Maybank suspends hearings on extending the Defense Production Act as air clears. A political ad urges votes for Clark Oates Wine and others in city council race.
The Star reports a flood of ballots over the weekend delaying final tabulation of the presidential poll. Hundreds of ballots arrived, nearly matching all previous days, making it impossible to finish before the publication deadline. A full local presidential preferences summary will run in Tuesday's Star.
Local firemen answered two weekend calls for minor blazes. At 8:30 p.m. Saturday a chimney fire at 35 E Pall Mall St was tackled by three companies with no damage. The second blaze occurred at 11 p.m. Sunday in a 1940 Plymouth sedan on the Valley Pike about a mile south of the city limits, with no damage reported.
President Truman's exit from the race triggered a surge of names as entrants or possibilities. Three full fledged candidates Estes Kefauver Richard Russell and Robert Kerr are named with others like Alben Barkley William Douglas Sam Rayburn Adlai Stevenson among those discussed as potential favorites. Truman's withdrawal shifts momentum to Stevenson with endorsements and a draft movement forming in Missouri while primaries loom in Nebraska and Wisconsin.
Washington reports quote Mrs. Truman saying she knew President Truman planned to announce he would not run again. The couple had discussed his age and strain, with Bess Truman appearing happier recently as she supported her husband’s decision.
Attorney General J. Howard McGrath testified he would not appoint Morris as a special assistant again. He said he has not filled out Morris’s financial questionnaire and does not know if he will. Morris seeks a government cleanup and has sent questionnaires to top officials.
The Distinguished Ladies Luncheon of Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival will be held Thursday at 12 noon in the George Washington Hotel ballroom. Mrs Harry W Butler, chair of arrangements, says the luncheon is sponsored by the Woman's Auxiliary of the Virginia State Horticultural Society. For the first time Horticultural Princesses from Virginia West Virginia Maryland and Pennsylvania will attend.

Republicans and Eisenhower supporters see it as a boost for their candidates while many Democrats note a smoother path for Senator Richard Russell. Few comment on specifics as lawmakers weigh the party’s future.
The Winchester and Frederick County Fire Companies announce an April 9 beauty contest at the Capitol Theater to name Honorary Fire Chiefs for the city and county. City contestants include Nancy Lee James and others. county contenders are Janice Marie Whitacre and two more. Winners will lead their divisions in the Apple Blossom Festival parade. out of town judges will pick the winners.
A three service search party, using air and sea teams, renewed efforts to locate the bodies of three Air Force officers killed when a jet bomber crashed into Chesapeake Bay Friday night near Langley Field Virginia.
Robertson said Truman knew he wouldn't be a qualified candidate and no conference among Virginia Democratic leaders was needed to decide support. Mrs Pollard, national committee woman, agreed with Robertson that Russell is the candidate.
The fiancee of Ralphy Harry receives a platinum watch four Springfield blankets four nylon lingerie sets and more as wedding plans unfold. A trip to Paris for two weeks is next, with Miss Coble coordinating trips while Harry’s ship was in New York. Betty Myerson reports for Miss Cable and also receives a duplicate prize.
