A car bomb exploded beside the U S Embassy in Saigon killing 17 and wounding 151. The blast damaged the five story building and forced speculation that the United States would retaliate against North Vietnam, possibly striking Hanoi.
Gov. George Wallace met with a 15 member Alabama civil rights delegation to hear grievances on voter registration and police actions. The group included Southern Christian Leadership Conference leaders led by Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Viola Liuzzo was killed during a march.
Eight hundred bands entered the Grand Feature Parade with Fairfax Virginia High School Band directed by Philip J Fuller noting 120 members split evenly with 60 boys and 60 girls. Also describes a roadside incident on Valley Pike near Maurertown where a tire was changed after a passerby offered assistance then a service truck arrived.
The House Committee on Un-American Activities unanimously approved a full scale investigation into Ku Klux Klan activities. Chairman Edwin E. Willis said preliminary findings show shocking crimes by secret Klan groups and ordered continued inquiry into the Black Muslims American Nazi party and the Minute Men.
In Detroit a private funeral was held for Viola Liuzzo a 39 year old mother of five killed after joining a Selma to Montgomery voting rights march. Attendees included Martin Luther King Jr Roy Wilkins Walter Reuther James Hoffa and other civil rights and labor leaders. King condemned violence while Hoffa opposed banning any group.
An Air Force F102 interceptor ran out of fuel and crashed 75 minutes after Maj. Donald Felty bailed out at 12,000 feet during a routine training flight. The unmanned jet wandered western Missouri before four pilots forced it to descend from 6,000 to 18,000 feet and over Sedalia and Kansas City, finally crashing in hilly terrain northeast of Stockton after fuel exhaustion.
