Troops Stop Diem Ouster Bid in Saigon Clash

National forces beat back a private army led by the Binh Xuyen in Saigon as they tried to oust Premier Ngo Dinh Diem. Twenty six killed and 112 wounded in over four hours of fighting, while U S missions and key utilities remained intact. The Hoa Hao and Cao Dai front warned of a Saigon blockade, and Diem prepared to meet with French and American envoys for crisis talks.

Nautilus Logs Over 3000 Miles In Trials

Cmdr Eugene P. Wilkinson announced the Nautilus has logged more than 3,000 miles with hundreds underwater during trials. He noted nine voyages totaling 319 hours 32 minutes over 69 dives and described minor faults including two electrical fires and a loose screw on a gear.

Chiang's Planes Hit Red Flotilla Near Matsus

Nationalist planes attacked a Red flotilla near the Matsus sinking one wooden craft and damaging seven others including three gunboats. Communique notes anti aircraft fire but all planes returned safely. The action targeted wooden craft at the Min River mouth near Foochow.

Auto License Sales Lagging In Local Office

Auto license sales in Boscawen and Winchester are behind schedule for the 1955 tags deadline of April 15. At 1:30 pm today the local office reported 4,500 tags sold with 7,000 more needed. Winchester City sales stood at about 1,500 since March 15, with roughly 4,000 city tags usually sold.

End of 65 Hour Prisoner Revolt at Nebraska Penitentiary

Lincoln Nebraska reports a 65 hour prisoner revolt ending with eight rebels releasing three hostages and surrendering after Gov. Victor E Anderson set terms. Two guards and one inmate were freed unharmed as insurgents, armed with knives and pipes, allowed meals and safe passage. The governor ordered 150 days in the hole and 60 days in solitary confinement for the leaders.

In Woodstock an armed father Wayne Allen Snyder held a shotgun before a funeral home to confront his daughter's suitor Avery L. Sherrill.
