State police in Pennsylvania say a male contractor from Philadelphia is being held for extended questioning in the murder of 17 year old Rachel Taylor, a Penn State freshman. Authorities provided no details, while sheriff Edward Miller noted no tangible evidence yet.
Last evening firemen swiftly brought a blaze in the stereotyping room of The Star office under control. Damage was negligible though potentially serious. The Star joins in thanking the volunteers and lauding Winchester firemen for their outstanding service and efficiency.
Weather outlook for the week beginning Monday forecasts showers midweek and again at week end with moderate to warm temperatures in Washington. The forecast notes showers and rising temperatures throughout the period.
City and county authorities detained a woman who used the name Hattie Virginia Clem to cash a $5 check bearing the forged signature of Alien Bond at Commercial and Savings Bank. Dellinger’s Garage towed the wreck. none suffered serious injuries beyond scratches and minor bruises. the other occupants’ names were not available.
Dr Albert E Blumberg Maryland and DC Communist party secretary said he would not answer questions identifying party members or seizure of records, claiming privacy and illegality without a warrant. He warned such queries could aid a blacklist harming those named and cited contempt threats.
J Russell Young, dean of White House correspondents, was appointed by President Roosevelt to head one of three District of Columbia commissioners. The 58 year old Republican reporter has covered the White House for nearly 20 years and is known in Clarke County, Virginia as a frequent visitor with Mrs. Young. He is an avid painter with works of Berryville subjects.

Dowell J Howard assistant state supervisor of vocational agriculture will be sponsored by Winchester Rotary Club for district governor of the 168th Rotary District. His presentation comes at the district conference in Bristol April 25 26. The district spans 44 clubs from Winchester to Greenville Tennessee. If elected he will succeed Dave Bearer of Johnson City Tennessee and take office July 1.
Judge Philip Williams took under advisement the case of McCormac versus Ebert over possession of a southeast corner building at North Braddock and Amherst used as a garage and showroom. McCormac testified the property is owned by a partnership incl. Mrs Gertrude McCormac and his family. rent arrears and month-to-month tenancy were cited as grounds to vacate.
The Chinese embassy to the United States submitted a formal declaration to the State Department denouncing the Central Government as a gang of slaves. The document, dated Chungking, calls the regime unfriendly to the Chinese nation and criticizes its actions.

A small blaze occurred yesterday evening in the stereotyping department of The Winchester Evening Star around seven. The oven used to melt lead for a flat caster started the fire, discovered by C. Douglas Barnett and Lawrences Bell who notified the fire department. Firemen contained the flames to the stereotyping area before water could spread further.
A community fundraising dinner featuring chicken and ham is planned at the Home of C D Dye near Cedar Grove on April 4 starting at 9 p.m. A Pleasant Valley Ladies Ice cream sale will also be offered, priced at 25 and 50 cents.
