Public vs Private Power Fight Looms Over House Bill
The House Appropriations Committee backed a public versus private power funding plan for the coming year. It endorsed many government owned projects to expand transmission in the West Northwest and Southwest amid GOP opposition. Rep Jenson of Iowa warned the measure could push private firms to sell to the government. The panel approved 577 million in spending with 536 million cash and 41 million in contract authority, a reduction from the President’s request. The 15 percent construction cut targets were first applied to rivers and harbors, with nearly half the cash allocated to the reclamation bureau, which received less than requested but more than this year.
