Senate prepares to override veto on veterans bill as Senator Cutting opens debate urging passage. Galleries crowded as veterans organizations and government employees observe a tense session with a predicted close vote.
A Washington message reports the Senate is still debating overriding the president's veto of a bill to compensate World War veterans and restore the federal salary scale. A Senate vote was expected before tonight's adjournment. The House had already overridden the veto by a large majority.
The Senate opened debate on President Roosevelt's veto of the veterans federal pay bill as leaders predicted a tight roll call vote. The House had overridden the veto 310 to 72, with Republicans likely backing the override in the Senate. Senator Cutting urged an override while noting Senator Glass' opposition.
With the eleventh annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival nearing, funds for the expenses are bolstered by continued contributions. Treasurer Clifford D. Grim and Finance head John F. Rodman Jr. acknowledge donors including Betsy Ross Confectionary and numerous businesses and individuals, totaling substantial support for the festival fund.

A quiet rise in some non ferrous metal bonds brightened the market slightly after a setback but most listings held steady and trading remained dull. Wheat stayed steady while cotton slipped, rubber and silver futures rose, and the pound opened in London at 5.10 dollars with call money at 1 percent.

William C. Stuart Sr. 66, noted attorney and general manager of the Mutual Home and Savings Association, died at his Newport News home after a heart attack. He was born September 16, 1867 in Chester South Carolina and practiced law in Newport News. He leaves a widow Alice Rhett Stuart three sons William C. Stuart Sr Robert B. and Alfred R. Stuart three brothers Dr Rhett Stuart Dr Gordon C. Stuart and Roger M. Stuart two sisters Mrs Robert B. Beere and Mrs William J. Barton and several grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Pauls Episcopal Church with interment at Green Lawn Cemetery. His son William C. Stuart Jr married Miss Susan Reid Williams of Winchester and was in town for the funeral.
