A state Crop Reporting Board summary notes early season outlooks show southern states more optimistic for peaches and cherries, while northern regions report variable damage from winter cold. Apples and pears show little evidence of severe injury, though no bloom yet in many northern areas and conditions may change with upcoming weather.
The Rev. Father John J. McVerry 84 former pastor of St Francis Staunton died at St. Vincent's Hospital Norfolk after illness. He was ordained 1870 and served in Richmond Winchester Staunton Old Point building St Francis Church Staunton. Burial in Staunton after solemn Requiem Mass in Norfolk.
The Robert E. Lee Memorial Foundation plans to restore Stratford estate in Virginia as a national shrine in memory of Robert E. Lee. The thousand acre plantation will become a memorial park with gardens and docks restored. A $500,000 fundraising campaign is underway with national and local committees and prominent advisors. Local contributions are nearing the goal, with several recent donors named.
After purchasing Rams burg Auto Supply Co the store offers the entire tire and tube stock at cost. Sizes include 29 x 4.40 for 4.50 and 30 x 31% for 6 with all sizes available under Winchester Drive Yourself System run by H. K. Green proprietor.
The death of Alton H. Spencer of St Johnsbury Vermont occurred at 2 AM after an eight day old operation at Winchester Memorial Hospital. He was a salesman for a Philadelphia marble firm and connected with the Masons of Proctor Vermont. His father in Vermont was notified and expected to reach Winchester for burial arrangements.
The Children’s Home Society of Virginia launches its annual drive in the city starting Sunday March 30. F D Preston and J T Phillips lead presentations in churches while church captains and workers are urged to meet March 31 at 7 30 pm in the First Baptist Church Sunday school to outline plans. Phillips sets up at JM Steck’s office on Rouss avenue.
Mrs. George Strother, wife of a prominent Whitacre citizen, died this morning at about 9 o clock at her home after months of illness. She joined the Methodist Church in youth and actively supported Whitacre Methodist Church South. Survived by her husband, two daughters, four sisters, and one brother, funeral Sunday with Rev Dolan officiating. Details of time and interment to appear in tomorrow's Star.
Virginians and others are urged by Gov. Johns to donate to the Byrd sword fund for Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Contributions must be received by April 5 to ensure the sword is ready on his Antarctic return. John M. Purcell, state treasurer, will receive the funds in Richmond.
Five men attempted a hold up at Citizens' Savings Bank at Eutaw and Baltimore streets in Baltimore. Watchman John Simms pressed the alarm after circling the counter, police were summoned, and one robber fired but missed. Employees said no funds were taken.
The funeral for Mrs. Martha E. Sanford widow of Charles Sanford will be held tomorrow at 2 PM from the home of her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Howard Patton 522 Fairmont Avenue. Reverends Stover and Clark will officiate. Interment is Mount Hebron Cemetery. Patriotic Order of America members will attend as a body and assemble at 1 PM tomorrow.

Inmates mutinied at the Missouri penitentiary leading guards to club 15 convicts and injure others. More than 3,000 of 4,000 prisoners faced breakfast cuts as factories closed and a strict regime began after two days of disorder.
The Winchester group school for reserve officers will meet at Shenandoah Valley Academy from 8 to 10 this evening led by Major F M Miller of the Eightieth division HQ in Richmond. The session covers Battalion in Attack and reserves officers are invited. Miller will report on the recent state convention of the Reserve Officers Association in Richmond.
Washington reports a sharp drop in Canadian liquor exports to the United States for February 1930. The figures show 150,997 gallons exported, down from 282,985 gallons in February 1929, according to a Treasury summary released by Assistant Secretary Lowman based on Ottawa data.
Shaungoilin the favored Irish horse owned by W. H. Midwood won the ninety first Grand National at Aintree after a neck and neck finish with Mellay's Belle. J. H. Whitney's Fir Landsey finished third as Shaungoilin was quoted 100 to 8 in the betting.

Police officers Persell Plank and Lee Barr found about three quarts of illegal liquor at W. L. Brannon's Woodstock Lane home yesterday. Brannon pled guilty to illegal possession in police court and was fined $118 and sentenced to three months in jail by Justice Weems.
The body of George D. Gleason left the city at 1:50 PM for his old home in McIntosh Falls Vermont where relatives will inter him. A sister, niece and nephew were located and Miss Mary Gleason of New York wired funds for burial and transport. The body goes to nephew Horace Gleason to rest beside his sister, a former missionary to Turkey. A Masonic thirty second degree ring was found among his effects.
F A Cate charged with operating an automobile while under the influence failed to appear at a police court hearing this morning. Judge Weems declared the cash bond of 500 dollars forfeited. Cate was accused of drunken driving when his car struck a parked vehicle owned by Earl Clowser, causing considerable damage.
In Konapunachi northwest Japan a fire leveled seven hundred buildings today. The damage is estimated at 1,000,000 yen about $490,000. The fire swept the town hall police station and school. One firefighter was killed and three seriously injured when a fire truck overturned.
Three armed but unmasked youths robbed the Watertown Trust Company in Watertown Connecticut, escaping with about 15 000 to 16 000 dollars. They herded two men five women and three depositors into a rear room while they emptied the vault and cash drawer and left after nearly ten minutes. An estimated 5 000 remained in two cash drawers. No alarm was sounded.
