Senate Interstate Commerce Committee approved a resolution calling for early congressional action to set a general policy on farm freight rates. Senator Smith of South Carolina, Democrat, chair noted the measure follows President Coolidge’s initial recommendations.
In a December message to Congress discussions on lowering farm freight rates continue. Senators consider a resolution to direct the Interstate Commerce Commission to apply a policy favoring agriculture in its rate-making, without prescribing exact rates. The aim is to guide the commission while preserving its independence.
The House approved the War Department appropriation provisions to maintain the regular army at 125 000 enlisted and 12 000 officers for the coming fiscal year. Amendments to cut enlisted strength to 62500 or set a 100000 maximum were rejected. An initiative to transfer 1500 tractors and 5500 trucks to the Agriculture Department for highway improvements was dismissed on a point of order.
