The Shenandoah Valley sees rising enlistment as federal mustering officers may arrive at any time. Captain Conrad urges immediate enlistment. recruiting parties in autos will visit towns to secure volunteers for the Second Virginia Regiment now under War Department control.
New enlistments listed include Albin F. Sponewall, Milton D. Hinton, James F. Chapman, Arnold Pience, Augh D. Fuller, Robert W. Galloway, James W. Wallace, Isaac W. Wallace, James E. Snapp, Robert W. Curtis, Albert E. o. The roll records service additions and honors these personnel.
Washington report from March 28 states U S Department of Agriculture experts find no substitute for Bordeaux mixture in potato blight prevention. They warn against early spraying with alternatives as most are ineffective or harmful. Copper fungicides remain the proven option for potatoes in the region.
Sir Moses Ezekiel American sculptor famed for works like Religious Liberty in Philadelphia and Virginia Mourning Her Dead in Virginia. Born 1844 in Richmond he joined the Virginia Military Institute cadet corps, served in the Civil War, and was later knighted abroad while remaining a loyal Virginian.
Lucy Strother colored died last evening at the home of Samuel Mash on East Piccadilly street after a long illness of dropsy. She had been blind for years and was frail. She was sister of Martha Randolph and aunt by marriage to Mary Morgan. Funeral at 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Pauls AME Church conducted by Rev. John Augustine. Burial in Orrick Cemetery.

War Department ordered four national guard regiments to active duty to guard public works and government property. The Seventh New York First West Virginia Second New Jersey and Second Connecticut were mobilized with Company F of Martinsburg attached to First West Virginia. A Martinsburg report said the men were replying swiftly to the call. Mrs Loring A Cover hosted Mrs Campbell of Winchester who visited and returned home Monday.
Mr. W B Cornwell president of Winchester and Western Rail road led testimony on the damage claim from Walter T Gore for a railroad through the island near Chambersville. He said local citizens subscribed over $85 000 to fund the line and described vast mineral and lumber resources that would benefit from rail access. He estimated $1500 as fair damages without fencing, while prior witnesses averaged 1500 to 1700.
The Navy announces the formal transfer of the Danish West Indies to the United States with Admiral James H. Oliver as governor. Secretary McAdoo will present a final check of 25 million dollars to Denmark as the royal standards are lowered and the American flag raised. Mrs Annie C Hottel wife of William T Hottel of Shryock and Hottel dies after long illness at her home near the old paper mill south of town at 6 10 this morning. She aged about sixty one was a longtime Winchester resident and church worker with two sons Edgar C and James F and eleven daughters. Burial in Mount Hebron Cemetery will be held at 3 PM Saturday with Rev W C Talbert officiating.
Attorney H S Larrick of Ward and Larrick will travel to Martinsburg to represent Charles H H Harper of Shawnee Oklahoma in a $25000 alienation of affections suit against his brother J W Karper of Charlestown West Virginia. Forrest W Brown of Charlestown assists in the case.
The Round Hill School will present a play on Friday night March 30 at 8 oclock. Admission for adults is 10 cents. The public is cordially invited.
The Woman's Prohibition League of America offers a twenty five dollar gold prize for the best essay by ages fifteen to nineteen on Does the Bible Teach Prohibition for the Individual State and Nation. A ten dollar gold prize goes to a high school boy for The Harmful Effect of Cigarettes. Essays must be 1560 to 2000 words, typewritten, and sent to Richmond Virginia by July 1 1917 with the writer’s name and age enclosed.
