Vacant House Burns and Grass Fires Across Area
A vacant house east of Berryville on Rt. 7 burned mid day yesterday as area firemen fought ten additional grass fires in 24 hours. The Clarke County house belonged to Walter A. Houdershell and was nearly caved in when crews arrived. The cause was unknown though insurance is adequate. Frederick County crews fought grass fires on Roosevelt Blvd in Pineville and in Stephens City east of town. Other blazes appeared near Nain and at a city dump in Winchester. none caused heavy damage. Train sparks blamed for out of control forest fire
Sparks from a passing train at Brooke Station ignited a field and started a fire that burned about 1000 acres of woodland and fields for more than four hours. Firefighters and volunteers prevented the blaze from reaching Brookwood Nursing Home housing 18 patients, as 20 fire units and local crews battled the flames across Stafford and neighboring counties.

2 Year Search Ends for Page Jail Escapee
Earl Smelser was captured at his mother's home in Cabbage Hollow near Luray after nearly two years on the run from Page County jail. Six officers arrested him without resistance. His mother, Edna Smelser, faced assault and battery charges after allegedly striking an officer with a brick and posted a $2,000 bond.
