The all out appropriation bill for the lease lead program, a record peacetime sum, was signed by Speaker Rayburn and sent to the Senate for Vice President Wallace to sign. It will be flown from Washington to Miami then to the President, who is vacationing off Florida. The $7 billion measure was approved by both houses, with Wheeler noting the President now has to decide if it becomes a war or peace measure.
Crisfield Maryland March 25 a 25 year old woman Marie Swift was found dead at the edge of a wood near Crisfield. State's Attorney F Maddrix said she appeared dead when brought there. Medical Examiner ordered an autopsy as authorities investigate the cause of death. She was a former Crisfield High School student and daughter of Chi Exe a local firefighter.
Miss Dorothy De Lasmutt of Rockville Md a St Marys Female Seminary School senior has been chosen to represent the school at the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester Va on May 12 Kay Aldridge a movie actress was the first St Marys student to attend the festival in 1934
Washington March 25 Acting Secretary of State Sumner Welles said the United States was satisfied that the Soviet Union had issued a declaration of ship to pro-British Turkey. He noted Russia would maintain comprehensive neutrality if Turkey were attacked. Welles also said the U S had urged Yugoslavia to resist Axis demands.
London reports a week's sea losses falling to 23 ships totaling 71,773 tons, with British and allied vessels suffering 60,670 tons and 11,103 tons from six Axis ships. Axis losses around 300,000 tons, while Allied and neutral shipping total 410,000 tons lost in five weeks. Coastal Axis trade remains key to the war economy.
Special drill for members of Co. 115 Virginia Protective Force will be held Wednesday and Thursday nights at 7 30 o clock. Men in the second platoon are urged to attend Thursday. Friday evening at the same time the regular weekly drill will be held. Admiral L M Nulton retired is expected to attend for a talk on Discipline and Courtesy.
