Bars To Southern Ports Removed Parity in ocean freight rates achieved
Washington March 23 The South Atlantic and Gulf ports won parity with North Atlantic ports in ocean freight rates. The Shipping Board approved a Gulf and South Atlantic conference request to eliminate differential against these ports, reducing charges by 15 cents per 100 pounds for gulf ports and 70 cents for South Atlantic. This move shifts much freight from North Atlantic routes to New York and southern ports, as schedules reflect increased direct movement through South Atlantic ports and Chicago area shipments now favor southern gateways.
